Hello,

Why don't all 2000+ Canadian Nickels respond to a magnet? Only about 7/8ths of the 2000 + Nickels, and 1/3 of the 2000 + pennies are picked up by a magnet. This site reports that all these coins are steel: You must be logged in to see this link.

Why do only some of the coins respond to a magnet? They must not all be steel. I've especially noticed that 2000 and 2006 Nickels do not take the magnet.

Thanks!

There have been discussions on this topic before but I am not sure how to point you to them. It seems that in 2006 and 2001 there were a lot of CuNi nickels made instead of steel. I suspected that either the workers at the Mint suddenly discovered some forgotten sheets of metal in the basement, or perhaps there was a problem with the dies stamping steel instead of CuNi. Perhaps there are drawbacks to giving contracts to the low bidders.

I have also noticed a lot of pennies that are not magnetic. My guess is that they are zinc but I have not tried the blowtorch test on them yet.

Not all who wander are lost.

Yes, not only is that site inaccurate, but also several other sites have innacurate information including wikipedia.

It appears only about 1/3 of Canadian Pennies have been minted in steel since the year 2000. The rest have continued to be minted in zinc.

And, it appears that most 2000, some 2001, and most 2006 Canadian Nickels are minted in CuNi.
