Just wondering who else sorts by hand on here? Not ready to get too serious yet as time is the biggest thing for me.I would like to do maybe $200 a week and as long as I stay above 25% Would make it worth my while.Being near the canadian border We get alot more can. pennies in our change and since they are copper until 96, that is a good thing.
I do it as much for relaxation as I do it for "the other reasons".For now at least.

I'm a hand sorter. I can manage to sort $300 per week if I'm working 70+ hours. If I'm only working around 40+ hours I'm guessing I could sort $500+ a week.

hand sorter here. i sort a box in just under an hour but i usually only do $200 a week or so. my jobs tie me up for 70 hours but i really dont do anything with the rest of my time. i also find it relaxing - plus it beats watching all that reality crap on the tv. and the writers strike?? i didnt miss 'em.

Also, a hand sorter. Don't know if you can call me a "sorter" yet because i have only sorted 1 box and 5 rolls of pennies, and 1 roll of fifty centers. *I just cant find time to get to another bank.

* (through my parents time) lol

I have maybe 10 dollars in copper pennies so far. I'm working on it.

Wanna know what I do by hand? I push the buttons on the automatic rolling machines and bagging machines.

I write the info on the bags of zinc for deposit.

I open the rolls by hand.

Seriously though.. I sort out the wheats, Indians, Canadians and culls by hand after the Ryedale does the bulk of the work.

I used to be a very serious hand sorter. I found that I could hand sort a lot faster using a digital scale than a magnifying glass. The big advantage of hand sorting is that your pennies last a lot longer and you don't have to worry about finding a bank that will take thousands of dollars in zinc.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

I was a hand sorter, then I saw the light. We are running out of time people....Buy, buy, buy!!!! Hand sort later, buy now....Just opinions.

In a way, we're all hand sorters.

I'm a hand sorter also. I buy about $100 of pennies a week, but only sort about $50 a week. Eventually I'll have to invest in a Ryedale if I'll ever make it through my backlog. I haven't been doing this for very long, but I'm buying as much as I can and sorting at my own pace.

When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband.

I'm a hand sorter. I just broke the 10,000 copper penny mark (I've only been at this for three months).

My fustration is that I lack the money right now to go "big time". I have everything else in place: the time, the storage capacity, motivation, etc. just not the money.

My ultimate goal is to get a million copper pennies.

My coin sorting "wet dream" is to purchase $10,000 (1 million pennies), buy a ryedale and then just go nuts! I figure it would be nice just spending most of my time sorting out zinc and replenishing coppers into an already massive million penny hoard! I would be increasing the copper to zinc ratio until I can make it all copper. I figure even holding zinc is better then holding fiat money so if I had a huge pile of money I would do this.

Dangerous Misteroman, Dangerous... But if you did it exactly by the book, it just might work....except that you get charged a fee for the cash advance....right!?!?

Oh, I sort by hand.... have a little more than $100 face of copper pennies! But I do it in spurts...I'm hoarding boxes right now, should have 20 boxes by next week. I can only get done about $25-$75 sorted a week. Will I get a machine? Don't know yet....for me it just may not be worth it.

Some cards charge for Cash advances while I think give you "a check" to pay off other bills.I think it is 3% with a limit of $50.I did it once with a CC.My available balance was like 22K or something. When the lady called and said it was interest free for 6 mos I took it all and just made sure it was back within the 6mos period.
but even the $50 fee would easily be made up in coppers and wheats.

The funny thing is Credit Cards are the reason I don't have the money! LOL!

I'm currently paying off the remainder of my credit card debt which I acquired purchasing precious metals back when they dipped in price, I wanted to lock in the low price, which I did. Gold and silver prices went way up since my purchases so it paid off but I still have a small amount of debt left (but a large amount of metal.)

The problem with this trick is I don't think it would work with the copper. Unlike buying PM's you have to sort it. It takes a LONG time to sort a million pennies and you still have to replenish the ~80% zinc with new coppers in a timely fashion meanwhile the whole time credit card interest will eat you alive.

Using credit cards is like buying on margin, you can win big if you can leverage to get a discount but you are much more likely to get cleaned out. I only did it this one time because I got a really good deal. Normally it is a very bad idea.

Now if you could borrow money at zero or very low interest then it might be a different story.

Well buy $9,500 and Use $500 for a sorter. That would have to happen first I guess so you could actually sort and take back the pennies back before the due date of the CC.
Lets see 1,000,000 divided by 50 days, would be 20,000 a day or 8 boxes.with approx 8 days to take back.I'm mostly just playing here but it could be possible and you would have a sore neck!!!

I like you misteroman, like myself you seem to be looking for what I call "holes" in the system. If you are lucky enoungh to find a good one you can even get rich.

A matter of fact I see copper pennies themselves (and coin inflation) as a hole in the system, although it won't make us rich still being able to buy metal at well under it's real cost is a steal.

I just don't think this plan can work, I just thought about how would you even purchase $9,500 in pennies in a timely matter (truck services charge big fees), and you are only left with eight days leeway to try and get them to begin sorting and still make it by the deadline.

Too many variables there.

I'm not trying to discourage you... keep looking for the "holes", they are out there...

somewhere.

I am "living the dream" You actually don't need a huge pile of money to do this. It only takes about $400 to get started. You can buy a Ryedale Coin Apprentice for about $350.. then use the other $50 for your first 2 boxes of pennies. Instead of buying all your raw pennies at once, you just cycle your capital from the zincs over and over again back into fresh pennies. You can spread that $10k of penny purchases over a few months. That way you are not tying up capital. To build up critical mass you sell off part of your production at market rates and plow the funds back into buying more raw material.

Every one of my machines, Ryedale, Wrapping machines, Coin Counters, etc. was paid for with proceeds from copper sorting. I started out as a hand sorter with a digital scale and built from there. My only regret was that I did not buy my Ryedale sooner than I did. That one piece of equipment allowed me to cycle my hoard capital much more rapidly. It has paid for itself over and over.

If you just want to sort a few pennies you can do it with your eyeballs, a magnifying glass, a scale; even a popsicle stick.. but if you want to get serious about hoarding, get a Ryedale, dude.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Im a hand sorter. I must say thank God for my digital scale. My eyes are terrible and the eyestrain from looking can be rough. I do plan to get a Ryedale soon though and thats one reason I havent been doing a major amount of handsorting. i do just enough to scratch the itch lol. I do hope my wheat percentages pick up though:-( lol
