I have a theory why some of the newer pennies are not sorting properly all the time in the Ryedale. Could it be that they are so new that they don't go down the chute at the same speed as the other coins and as a result sometimes sort incorrectly. If set on a zinc sort (Zinc coin in the comparitor), which should sort get 100% Zinc in the accept pile and some zinc, all copper and all old wheats in the reject pile, there are some newer pennies that appear in the copper reject section. You can run the newer pennies that sorted incorrectly, and they will most of the time sort properly a 2nd time thru. Thsi tells me there is some inconsistency with the process and the one thing it could be is the speed at whcih they go thru the Ryedale.

Perhaps the mint had the planchette supplier, put a little Unobtanium in the coins, so they can track us evil future melters. Seriously though I am perplexed by the 2007's also. At least it's not just my personal machine having troubles with them. One theory I had, is that the coins being shiny and reflective, are disturbing the electromagnetic field enough to cause a reject.....sometimes.

Ryedale did you ever try a different manufacturer's coin comparitor? I think I might try my old coin sorter and see if it treats these 2007's differently. |

I have no problem with them at all. My Ryedale sorts them perfect every time. I think what you guys are experiencing is a slight variation in the metalic content of the zinc plancet. If you do a copper sort they will correctly reject every time. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

If I do a copper sort they will also reject every time. It's the Zinc sort where they don't work properly. |

I knew that When something doesn't fit your parameters, you change your parameters. The main thing we are trying to do is to seperate the copper from the zinc and not miss any old wheats or Indians. I went back to the copper sort because it was more accurate. I use a big pan to quickly sift throught the zincs and pull out the old wheat's and Indians (Found 6 tonight!) This way I minimize the number of coins I run through the machine and I make sure that I never miss an old wheat or Indian. This method is actually faster than a machine sort. |

I took your advice on sorting for copper and then doing a quick zinc sort. Got my first Indian and got 2 pennies older than 1920 out of 2 sealed Brinks boxes. Change the methodolgy and get results like that, I couldn't believe it. I had all the zincs from last week - $180 worth and decided to do a hand sift thru them, because the oldest coin I got out of this batch was a 1940. I did the search and found 2 newer Canadians, 1 Barbados penny, and 1 Bahama penny. Net result the hand search on the zincs didn't change my results, but it does seem quicker only doing one Ryedale sort. Now if we could just make the Ryedale sort the older pennies where we want on the 1st sort and we are really golden. |
