New to the forum.
Started small with $10 in pennies. When I told the teller that I wanted my withdraw in pennies, she said "really....ok." She was sort of taken back and said "I'll have to get that from the vault"
5 hand rolls and 15 bank rolls. 160 (16%) coppers, including a 1955 wheat 813 zincs 25 '82s (keeping for now- trying to decide what to do with them) 1998 and 1994 Canadian
In your (anyone) experiences, do the smaller banks and branches usually have medium to large amounts of coin on hand or do I have to make requests ahead of time.
Thanks, this forum is really "neat" and I have learned allot!

It really varies from branch to branch. Most smaller banks will probably have fewer rolls on hand, but the bigger banks that have several boxes are often hesitant to sell you a lot of them. If doing mass quantities it is often best to preorder several boxes. Don't ignore the smaller banks though.. that is part of the fun of the drivebys.. sometimes they have a stack of customer wrapped rolls that they have not gotten around to shipping yet and they are glad to get rid of them. I got a nice group of CWR from a grocery store bank the other day just by asking. |

Impressive number.. great percentage too! Just imagine how many you could sort if you could get them out of the rolls faster..

Mind if I ask what kind of deal? How many 40% or 90% halves did you give up for that many IH's? |

Twenty rolls Canadian nickels, 263 pure Ni (32.9%) - far above average. Very few steel coins, only one 2007.
All in identical (and new) wrappers.
Looks like a coffee can collection. |

Sorted $115 this weekend, three boxes from my second $100 purchase and $15 I picked up today (Saturday). Don't have an exact count of the coppers but I have about $91 in zinc so that would put me right at %20 copper.
For now all my copper is going into an empty box that the Tidy Cat scoopable litter comes in, and it's getting about 1/5th to 1/4th full just on the $235 I've sorted by eye so far. |

Good choice of storage buckets William.. I think the standard Tidy Cat buckets hold about 18,000.. but they make a larger size bucket for the serious hoarder. |

1000 pennies sorted 331 59-82 copper 5 wheat cents (oldest 1930-D) 2 Canadian (this is lower than usual percentage I see) 1 possible 1983 DDR
800 Nickels sorted 8 from 1939-1959 copper/nickel 0 wartime silver 39 Westward nickels 2004/2005 9 1969-2008 "S" mint marks if that's worth saving...please advise 744 common ones which may or may not go back to the bank |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

3-5-08 batch $23.50 sorted (all customer wrapped rolls) 312 copper 13.28 percent copper 5 wheats 1 Canadian 4 dimes (a lot of times from such as small batch)
This batch, along with 55 coppers from circulation, brings my total copper hoard up to $125.00 face value. This batch had a lot lower percentage of coppers than normal, actually third lowest of the year, but still, more than I had before. Signature has been updated to reflect all current results. |

Just sorted part of today's acquisition, $8.5 CWR = 31% coppers! Better than my box average. Going through my second part, also CWR, looks about equal, or slightly better.
Sorter $100 of halves today, no 40%..... BUT TWO!! Walking liberties...look to have been cleaned at some point, but still...$14 worth of $1 face, not bad! |

Got the Mother of All Skunkings today! Those aliens that are sucking the copper out of the coinage supply have struck again!
Picked up one of my regular shipments of 24 boxes from a bank near home and every single one of them was a dud.. solid zinc.. not even shiny zinc.. the multicolored sorted zinc! Swapped 2 boxes at one of my other banks and both of those were duds as well.
The shipment of 8 boxes I picked up earlier this week from Dud Central Bank near where I work actually had 1 good box in it and only 7 duds. That was a real surprise since the previous 12 boxes from this bank had all been duds. I canceled my weekly order from them earlier this week. Against my better judgement I even let them sell me 4 more boxes yesterday.. Only one of those was a dud.. 3 of the boxes were actually normal. Now they are just messing with me. I was actually able to glean 22 coppers from these 34 boxes.. I think that qualifies as the lowest copper percentage of all time.
The good news is I got lots of pennies sorted today. Sorting report for today: 100,000 coins - 40 Brinks boxes From the 6 normal boxes 3024 Copper 3 darn dimes 20.16%
Interesting coins Wheats - 16, 25, 25-S, 29, 38, 43-S Steel 2 cent Euro 1926 Silver 6 Pence - Never got one of those before
Highlight of the day: Buying $51 of Gas with zinc cents in a single transaction - A New Record! |

Just because you are having a bad day.. (low copper percentages, a few dud boxes in a row, etc.) never believe it can't possibly get any worse. This morning the cat crawled up on the end of the bed and really upset me to the point of seeing yellowed on me. I know she was miffed that I don't let her help sort anymore but I really feel this was highly unnecessary.
Ah, the start of a brand new day..
Will I win a nice prize in the raffle at the coin show today? .. I don't know.. but this is surely not a good sign. |

Man oh man....24 dud boxes, that's a lot of zincs. If one of the cats really upset me to the point of seeing yellowed on me, I would have a nice warm hat, or maybe gloves....Good luck with the raffle.
