Hello folks! I'm new to the forum and trying to get a handle on the situation. As of 02-02-08 the last four Fed boxes I've checkout were mixed dates but all zinc! I hope the party is not over and I arrived too late. Would love comments from other as to what you are finding! I am sure the Fed is breaking its own rules and now plucking out the coppers and melting them. Email me! john@minges.com

Greetings John. Seems to me either you had a streak of bad luck there or someone else is sorting your area. I don't know what a "Fed box" is unless you are talking about a Brinks or some other bank box. Where those boxes un-sealed or had they been re-sealed?
My penny boxes have been weighing slighly over 15 pounds consistently (strangly) so they should be at about 25% or more.
I'm going to move this thread over to the penny/nickel hoarding forum since it is an excellent topic to discuss there. |

| The boxes were all sealed and pennies in plastic rolls. I was referring to the regular box with $25 per box delivered by Brinks to the banks. |

Perhaps another branch of the same bank within a short distance of your home or work? That might be the best bet other than to change banks entirely. Might also be time to go to the confessional and let a known teller in on what's happening and why you'd like that to change. Tough to be a stealth copper hoarder without at least a few people catching on.
Good luck. Having 100% of 4 boxes being zinc just seems mysterious. |
Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |

You found my dump bank!
Seriously though, there is a good possibility that you are getting someone else's rejects after they have been reprocessed. What area of the country are you in? Does the bank happen to be Bank of America? I dump there all the time. All those zincs have to go somewhere.
Best bet would be to try a few other banks to source some pennies. 4 dud boxes is really a bummer. You can save a lot of time by checking the box weight or roll weight with a scale so you don't have to open the rolls. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

The boxes actually came from different banks! All were sealed $25 Brinks boxes in plastic rolls that banks get when they order from the Fed. I’m in NC so more than likely I’d guess the pennies are coming out of Richmond, VA. I have to believe that the government is taking the copper coins out of circulation. The coins were mixed dates and not all new but all zinc! Come on, it can’t be too much of a stretch to believe if all of us are out there pulling the copper coins out of circulation that the government would not want to get in on the act too to save money. If anyone else is in NC shoot me an email and let’s talk!

| John, i'm in Gatlinburg Tn. All our brinks wraped(paper rolls) come from Knoxville. My pennies are better now (25%) than last summer (20%) May just be a 1 time thing, how long you been sorting? |
