I'll have to call around at the Tunica casinos. I think I called the Grand Casino last week and they specifically said they don't take pennies.
Well at least I have a bank that will take pennies in plastic bags. I have to have a rough count on them for making a deposit but they will send them to the Federal Reserve Bank branch in Memphis that will do a machine count. Any discrepencies will be adjusted to the deposit.
I;m going to be sending out a check as early as tomorrow for the Ryedale, and placing my 1st $1,000 order at my local bank too.
Things are going to start getting serious around here real soon! |

I have dumped Halves and quarters at one of the Indian casinos I go to. I have not tried dumping pennies there yet.
William.. you can get a pretty good quality counter for 2 or 3 hundred to bag your pennies with. You can also get a pretty close count by putting the bags on a good scale. |

I'm half tempted to order some pizza and give the delivery person a box of zincs when they come and tell them to keep the "change". Anyone done it? |

That would be sort of mean to do to a delivery person, they have to carry all that change around with them.
Although for the tip now I could see dropping a few rolls on them...
Reminds me of when I was 14 or 15 a friend of mine and I went out several times for pizza and paid in pennies. Didn't make the cashier too happy but we had already eaten and what could they do?
Besides, back then a pizza and sodas for two was only $8 or so. Before too much longer at the rate inflation is going it will be $80. |

I'm sure they could take it back to the pizza place which is within sight of here and cash them in. I'd give him a good tip to make it worth the effort. |

Don't do it. Do it to deserving places, like gas stations and liquor stores. Leave delivery folks alone. You will get put on a DON'T DELIVER list. |

I wish I could use zincs to pay my student loans, that'd get rid of a bunch of them. |

If your studant loans are at a bank there is no reason not to.. I usually use several boxes of zinc to pay part of my mortgage payment every month. |

misteroman.. I don't pay my entire mortgage with pennies (though I could) I just stick them with 4 boxes as part of the payment.. then take that extra $100 and go buy 4 fresh boxes at another bank to sort. Doing it again in the morning. |

I'll be trying my first zinc dump sometime next week (had to add the word zinc there, just didn't sound right otherwise).
Probably try to start off small with $500 in 20 bags just to get them used to me.
Depending on how the sorting goes the next week I can boost up to $1,000 or more :)
Hey, when I opened the account the account manager said they even have a cart for bringing in bags of coins so that the tellers don't have to carry them any distance, so I'll take advantage of their generosity! |

Finally I can brag about this, I WORK AT A BANK!
Before I got into coins and hoarding, I thought being a teller was a joke. Not anymore, I see almost every coin that comes in from about 8 different tellers. They save anything and everything for me to sort through, some even have copper cents pre-sorted for me.
On top of that, where I work will give me as many boxes of whatever denomination I want and I obviously don't get any sort of charge for them (5/3 told they'd charge me 2% since I'm not a business). Then, when I go through them and have coins I don't want, I RUN THEM THROUGH A FREE COIN MACHINE!
I must say it's pretty convenient, and membership has its privileges!

I've been trying to get my wife to quit her job and work at a bank.Granted she would make less money, but oh my the fringe benefits!!!!!!!!!! ---True story A guy that used to come into my first pizzeria was a teller. He was doing paperwork and heard a lady at the next teller say" I'm not sure if these are worth anything(face value-wise),they are so old".He went over there and helped the teller and walked away with a bunch of silver and GOLD certificates!!!!!!!!This this was about 10 yrs ago.If I didn't have to deal with customers I probably would do it. Derek Congrats though,I am jealous |

Welcome to realcent, cent_guy. You have a pretty sweet deal there, and no doubt I'm a little envious! Be sure to let us know if any interesting coins pass your way. |

I'm glad to see a bank employee in here too.
Welcome the_cent_guy, and let us know what the mood is at your bank about the falling value of the dollar.
At my primary bank when I picked up my first 50 boxes and at my dump bank when I opened my account I told the account managers exactly what I was doing and why, even gave them the web sites for ryedlaecoin.com and coinflation.com to look up. They both agreed that the falling value of the dollar was a huge problem and did not act at all skeptical when I suggested that in not too many years the dollar would be replaced by a new currency tied to Canada and Mexico. And I didn't get the impression they were just humoring me either, they seemed genuinely worried about the inflation crises.
Do you find most of the bank employees you work with have a good understanding of inflation and what it's doing to our economy, or are they as uninformed as the average citizen? |

William.. you can get a pretty good quality counter for 2 or 3 hundred to bag your pennies with. You can also get a pretty close count by putting the bags on a good scale.
I've already got a good postal scale from when I was doing the rocks as a hobby. I can weigh 27.4 pounds of pennies quick, then drop in pennies until it just turns over to 27.6 pounds. I figure that will be a bit over $50 per bag and the bank will catch the overage when they do the count.
I can't even think about buying anything else for the pennies until I sell enough copper to pay for the Ryedale, my wife would have a legitimate fit! |

William.. I think you might be going a little heavy. Remember some of those zinc cents have wear. The postal scale I use only cost about $10 plus shipping.. bought it on eBay. It is good to within 5 grams.. perfect for checking brinks box weights without breaking the seal to check for duds. I put a $50 bag of zincs on one of our Toledo scales at work the other day. These scales are calibrated every 6 months and certified by the bureau of weights and measures. The bag of zinc only weighed 27.1 pounds.
As long as the bank is going to credit you for the overages there is no need be exact. You may need a some sort of counting device later when you start selling off some of the copper.
I might buy some of your pennies.. if you can throw some rocks in the box as well. That would make your wife really happy. |

Hoard...You're probably right about being heavy on the bags, I never considered taking into account wear making the pennies weigh less. I'm hoping that the bank will be honest in their count to catch any overage I have, but I guess I can drop down to 27.2 lbs so as not to be more than a few pennies over.
To be honest I don't think the bank will really care if bags are even a bit short of $50, after all that's why they are counting them in the first place. And I can't imagine merchants counting every penny in a bag of 5,000 either, so I'm sure that the banks are used to not getting exact amounts.
It's just new to me and I suppose I want the bank to consider me honest, so I was going to err on the heavy side to be safe.

At my bank, the head teller told me concerning bagging cents that "it does not matter if you are over a little or short; they're JUST pennies."
I counted 5000 *by hand* to see how much it would weigh. It came up to be 27.6 lbs. |
