Around here, Humboldt County California, there are numerous thrift stores. I hit them up often looking for precious metals. They rarely have coins but I have bought some junk silver for way under spot a couple times. My bet find thus far has been a solid sterling silver tray that weighs about 12 troy ounces. I bought it for $2.75. I have also been able to buy solid gold jewelry for about half the spot price on numerous occasions, but its always small items, earrings and such. I have also gotten a sterling silver belt buckle with a solid gold bird image stuck on the front. It cost me almost 20 bucks, but it is beautiful and has an almost an ounce of silver plus I estimate a gram of pure gold. I also buy solid copper and brass items if the price is under the scrap value. Anyone else hit up the thrift stores for treasure hunting?

Thrift stores can be hit and miss but sometimes you can find precious metals for cheap.

I bought 30 standing liberty quarters (all worn and common date) for $1.50 a piece. Sometimes can buy gold chains on 50% off day for far below melt.

I did not sell the tray, it's stashed with my other sterling. I definitely do a lot more stockpiling than selling. They always got a bunch of silver plated stuff, usually pretty junky, but I always check to see if any sterling is hiding with the plated stuff. The tray was clearly marked "WALLACE STERLING H102". Yea it's definitely hit or miss, but super fun looking for treasure in the piles of junk. I do almost always find brass or copper for less than scrap prices but solid silver and gold only on occasion. Even the silver plated brass and copper items are sold for less than scrap quite often. I have a few crates of that junk in my shed that I will scrap when I run out of room back there.

My wife and I make the rounds several times a week. We've gotten quite a few 10k and 14k gold necklaces, as well as some foreign 12k pieces. Always checking the brass aisle, most of the time it's overpriced in regards to the current price at the yard but I do find a few gems. Besides PM, we look for vintage items to resell. I scored a McIntosh amplifier for $25 that sells for upwards of $500 on eBay. Numerous vintage clothing items too that sell for 20-40x what we pay. It's out there, just gotta do your research on what's hot.

I do it from time to time. I like church sales better though!

Are you throwing that out?

I bought a bag of cut up silver spoons for $10.00 at a habitat for humanity store last week.

I sold it here for 165.00. I fing the sterling is almost always underpriced.

Two weeks ago-a .900 fine picture frame. 2 1/2 Troy pounds. Pounds is not a typo! Will soon be resting comfortably at the bottom of Market Harmony's crucible. My price- $2.91-thrift stores rule!

"You're not really gonna throw that out...are you"?
