Some dude that is a client of the restaurant where I work mentioned he had some silver coins with him, so naturally I asked to take a look. He returned with a mercury dime a 1942 Washington quarter and a lovely 1883 Morgan dollar.
After informing him that the coins had no numismatic value he offered to sell them to me, to which I responded by soliciting an offer.
He countered I suppose by asking for an offer so I offered him approximately spot, and pulled out a $20 FRN.
He was satisfied with this, although it later occurred that I could have offered less and he would have most likely taken it, although I considered this to be sleazy.
Nevertheless I am pretty pleased because I got a Morgan at melt, plus the quarter and dime.

You did good.
Just because it's possible to screw someone doesn't mean you should do it.
Offer a silver seller a fair price, maybe 10% above a dealer's price, they might come to you with more.
Then you can turn us on to some good deals and put money in your pocket.
How does that sound? |

As a dealer, I've had more than a few opportunities to be "less than fair" with people who were obviously ignorant. I have always taken the high road and paid the proper prices. I found that this has brough me long-term reward as I have earned the trust and respect of my local clientele. Plenty of positive word-of-mouth and tons of repeat business.
Good job, Quagmire! |

Yeppers, I once offered approx. 1X below current market sell prices to a guy and he very well knew the silver market. He bit and two weeks later returned with 1,200 face in 90% :)

His age is somewhat advanced and he was at one time at least dealing in antiques so this scenario is entirely possible. |

I'm not quite certain I grasp what you mean by this anecdote. Care to elaborate? |

I agree. Always better to take the high road. Why mess up your good name for a cheap deal. Deals come and go while reputations very hard to fix once damaged. Good for you. |

You did great. It is not just here on Earth that you will have to answer for your reputation and actions. We will all have to answer later for our actions. |
