i know i am just not using the right search words.

does anyone know of 'large' rounds being made. the gf's son came up with the idea he wanted one. after saying, imagine how big a coin we could make, if we melted a whole 25.00 box of cu.

so , xmas present presented itself.... if i can find a 'coin' of 8oz to a kilo.

thanks
charlie

It's math time!

A $25.00 box of cents, filled entirely with copper Lincolns, would weigh 2500 X 3.11g = 7775 grams.

The density of copper is roughly 0.009 grams per cubic millimeter. So the volume taken up by all the copper together is 7775 grams / 0.009 g/mm3 = 863,889 cubic millimeters.

How big of a coin will 863,889 cubic millimeters make?

I will assume that the diameter to thickness ratio of the cent will be preserved. The cent is 19.05 mm in diameter and 1.55 mm thick, giving a D/t ratio of 12.29. That means that the diameter of our big coin will be 12.29 times larger than the coin's thickness.

The volume of a cylinder is V = Pi * r^2 * h

In terms of the diameter, that is V = Pi * d^2 * h / 4

Now, replacing d with 12.29*t, I can express the volume in terms of thickness, V = Pi * (12.29 * t)^2 * t / 4

Now, I solve the equation for t = ( (4 * V) / (12.29 * Pi) )^0.333

And the result is t = 44.7mm (or 1.76 inches). The corresponding diameter would be 1.76 inches * 12.29 = 21.6 inches.

If you melted a whole box of copper cents into one big cent, keeping the coin proportions the same, you'd make a coin that is 21.6 inches in diameter, 1.76 inches thick, and weighs 7.8 kilograms.

Would you have the 5% other metals still included in that, or would it be 999 fine after the creation of this Franken-coin?

The largest copper round I have come across to date was a 1 pound giant 999 fine copper penny. I don't have it any more (sold it to a magician who wanted to use it in his tricks ) but I have a couple pictures.

Yes, that was a nice looking coin but what's that .999 crap? I want one made out of 95% copper so it can be circulated.
