as i understand the fiat metal law, businesses can place reaonsable restrictions on accepting coins in payment for goods but they can't refuse legal tender in payment of a debt. theoretically you could pay your property taxes this way. of course, i would expect they might find some code violations on your property if you did that. |

You missed his last line in the video...when asked is he going to count all those pennies, he said we have machines that can do that and they are not in the union so they can stay on late! Oh brother. |

Almost everywhere in the world that true but it doesn't work in Canada. Coins are legal tender only if you have very small amount of coins else they AREN'T legal tender. They can be legally refuse as a payment of a debt.

This thread reminds me of a youtube video:
"Watch the used car salesman's stunned reaction as our red-haired penny prankster tries to buy a USED CAR with a truckload of pennies! Priceless!"

oh now that was funny....it is rather hard to use bulk pennies even rolled the two box pennie club is exclusive and the three box even more so...I tried at the DMV with 3 boxes....they looked at me like I just got off a spaceship...I used FRN's instead...at least I tried. |

I never understood the point of these "protests." For all the time and effort you take in assembling the coins, you'd put wear and tear on your car, depreciate it further by driving it around, AND waste gas.
I'd be much simpler to go into a bank, ask for packs of $1 bills, and protest that way. Then again, if we still had fractional currency...... |
