| I got a silver QUARTER from McDonalds drive thru last year. When the change hit my hand, it made an unusual sound. 1964 quarter. Once in a lifetime these days. |

I have a question for all of our Canadian realcent members. How often do you find silver Canadian dimes? Here in the States, I've only found a few 80% silver dimes, but I've found about 6 o7 50% silver dimes over the past year (nearly as many non-silver '68s as I've found).
And do coin shops in Canada sell 80% silver dimes in bulk? |

One of my Canadian sources kept telling me that dimes were where it's at. However, they could never really deliver, so I don't know if there was any validity in his opinion.
I did not pursue enough to keep statistics, but I do know that I went through a pretty substantial number of dimes and never found more than a handful of any worth keeping. I came to the very unscientific conclusion that the pickin's were better elsewhere. In other words, I never did try it in earnest by buying $5-10K of dimes as a test; however, my empirical results were not promising.

I had setup my old dump bank as another pickup for halves, $1000 a week. Started off OK with FED boxes, then last Friday I get two boxes rolled by American. Soon as I open the box I can see there is no ryme or reason as far as the counts in the rolls- cashed in and was $8.50 short. Not only that every single half dollar was marked in RED. So I went in yesterday to cancel my perpetual half order and thought I would switch it over to dimes- I seem to be starving for boxes, noone can get ME enough haha. Manager says I got a couple extra boxes of dimes right now if you want, I hate them but I bought them haha. What a pain in the a$$, paper machine rolls that would not let the coins go. First box was a skunk, second box gave up a Rosie and a Merc, kept up my average of 1 silver per box but I am sure it wasn't worth the effort. I will see how 4 boxes a week goes for awhile, maybe try to buy some bags where I buy halves off coin counters. You know the silvers gettin slim when I start searchin dimes. HH all, Mark |

Sorted another $250 Brinks box today, and found TWO silver dimes: 1964 and 1959. No Foreign.
That brings my year-to-date totals to: $2050 searched, twelve 90% silver dimes, one 50% silver dime. |

| Mark.. maybe you are getting my rejects. My machine rolls them really tight. Are they in N.F. String & Son paper? The trick to opening those types of rolls is just start at the two edges of the paper and completely unwrap them. |

| HCB, If these are your rejects (NOT) then you need glasses. I picked up 4 boxes today and did alright, only one was skunk, the other 3 produced one Merc and 5 silver Rosies. I did however cancel my 4 box a week order there- too much time invested for not enough return. Besides I need to use the coin counter in their lobby and I don't like to have them order coin for ME and dump volumes of coin there too. I did find a better way to open them rolls- run a utility knife lengthways on the roll and just rip the paper a little, look and dump. HH all, Mark |

| Mark.. LOL. I was just joking about the rejects. I agree with you that the time/return ratio on dimes is pretty low. You will notice that I don't do huge quantities.. just what I pick up here and there when doing pennies. It makes my banks happy to get rid of their customer wrapped dimes and it is always nice to have the banks like you. I have a little bit of an advantage on dumping them. I just drop them in the hopper of one of my rolling machines and have it chunk out rolls of dimes while I am sorting pennies with the Ryedale. I think you can cut the ends off those paper rolls and with your knife and they will just open right up. |

| I missed out on a bunch of hand rolls last month at my bi/Thursday half pickup, she said that mine was the only coin they had to order that two weeks. I asked if she had any left but NO it all went out, I could have cried haha. I told her I would like to look at the customer rolls next time that happens but we'll see. HH Mark |

A couple need to knows on Canadian junk silver.
1967 dimes or quarters are either 50% or 80%, no practical way to tell. The half's and dollars are 80%.
All Canadian silver can be checked really easily with a magnet. Silver will not be picked up, all others will as they are primarily nickel. This is the best way to discern a 1968 silver from a non silver. |
