Just starting a Dimes report here, not many of us doing dimes, but though there should be a report.

I'll start, I have now done about $2500 in dimes, and have gotten a whopping...............9 silver dimes in the $2500 face. This is consistent or even a bit lower than the reports on the Coin Roll Hunting section of Treasurenet. $1500 have been from CWR, the rest from a single bag. I'm buying off 2 machines, and have been bugging the vault tellers, ensuring them not to turn them in. So will I keep doing it??? Heck yes! As insane as it sounds, I absolutely love sorting the dimes. Im still doing it by hand, but the silver thrill is so powerful, that one in ~$300 makes it that much more special. It truly is like treasure hunting.
In addition to other hobbies, I love metal detecting, and have searched for untold hours for my first silver in the ground, with nothing yet. In my first $1000 bag, I found 4 silver dimes. They are small and get missed by people. I'm already there for pennies and I simply state, "got any dimes? Yup $250 worth, you want them? Oh Yeah. and bingo the treasure hunt begins. I can get my metal detecting thrill even when theres a foot of snow on the ground. Then I just bag off the dimes, and take them into my return bank, dump them, and do it again. It's really a side activity to the penny sorting, and is only worth doing because I'm already there. A fun complementary activity, that is more entertainment than profitable. I will continue to process them as long as I'm doing pennies.

OK penny hoarders Fire at will, Tell me which mental hospital to report to. DIME KOOK Andy

Me too!

I feel kind of bad, almost like I'm cheating on my Ryedale machine, when I bring home a big box of dimes to hand sort.

Hunting dimes is like treasure hunting, and unlike halves, banks consistently have plenty to part with.

I've had some incredible luck searching dimes recently. Yesterday I searched $100 and found three silver dimes, and last month alone I found two Mercury dimes. And last year I found quite a few silver Canadian dimes, two of which I received in change. I'm hitting the dimes hard right now, because I know this silver streak probably won't last.

The silver content of a pre-65 U.S. dime is only a little over a dollar right now, but silver adds up fast. Finding enough silver dimes to make a roll is very doable, and worth over $50.

I also like searching dimes because edge checking is usually enough to spot the silver. It's much faster than date checking.

Anyone else a dime searcher?

I would do it too if I was in America! Unfortunately there are no silver coins here in Australia :-( Our circulating currency was completely changed here in 1966...

Wouldn't it be less time-consuming just to buy 50-dime all-silver rolls on eBay??

Of course! But where's the fun in that? I like the thrill of the hunt, too much. It's only time-consuming if I don't enjoy it. For most people, however, I understand that buying a roll is preferable.
Also, I get a sense of satisfaction knowing that I paid only ten cents for a coin that is worth over one dollar.
Again, it's not time consuming for me, but for most people, it would be.

Compare it to fishing/hunting

wouldn't it be cheaper or less time consuming to buy a fish or a steak? Of course. It's not for everyone.

So I take it now that it's completely impossible to find silver coinage still in circulation?

Just got 3 silver quarters out of a tellers tray 12/31. Happy new year to me. Not as good as HCBTT but I'll take it. She had no clue.......

Welcome the the forum, No82s. Silver quarters are actually the most difficult silver coins to find "in the wild." And finding 3? Nice score!

I searched a box of dimes ($250) today and found 2 silver rosies. This brings my total to five silver dimes so far this year. I'm going to try to complete a roll, I've determined!

Since 01/01/08, $450 dollars searched, 5 silver dimes. I'm curious to see how much I have to search before I find a roll's worth of silver.

And here I thought I was the only guy doing dimes. I like the thrill of the hunt too. I actually tried running some through my Ryedale about 8 months ago. Jammed it up really bad.. LOL. Then I found I could get it to work if I dropped in one dime at a time so it couldn't double up on the feed wheel. It sorted out the silver too. But edge checking is much more efficient. Of course if Andy comes up with a new wheel for dime sorting I am in for it. I could dump all the dimes in and then drop the rejects in the automatic rolling machines. That would be really efficient. I think I will go through those 40 customer wrapped rolls I picked up the other day tonight. I don't expect any revisits from the Silver Santa.. but who knows?

I got silver!!! OK, it was only one dime out of 40 rolls.. but at least I didn't get skunked. found a 1956-D silver dime and 1 Canadian non-silver dime. Only took a few minutes to roll the rejects back up using the automatic wrapping machine.. I love my machines! Dropped them off at the bank this morning and got 2 fresh boxes of pennies and a small stack of that fiat currency just in case something good turns up in the auction at coin club tonight.

I know the percentage was low, but I am happy finding just one dime and I am ready to do some more.

The silver streak continues!

I searched $300 in dimes today. The $50 customer-wrapped rolls yielded a 1954 rosie, and the Brinks box yielded an AU 1967 80% silver Canadian mackerel dime. I love those '67 Canadian coins with the animals on them.

Since 01/01/08, $750 searched, 6 90% silver U.S. dimes, and one 80% silver Canadian dime. This is much better than the percentages I had last year when I tried dimes. Christmas is over, but I'm going to credit the Silver Santa for my finds.

Searched 381 Canadian dimes today. I think I got skunked. But I don't know what the weights are supposed to be to tell the difference between the 50% silver dimes and the non silver dimes for 1968. Does anybody have those weights?

I bought $250 in dimes today, but as I was walking out the door with box in hand, I heard one teller say to another, "You already searched those for silver, right?"

......you guessed it: No silver. But I did get a Trinidad dime. Not silver, but at least it's something different.

YTD: $1500 searched, 8 90% silver dimes, 1 50% silver dime.

Thank goodness the dimes are a fast search. All were clear-wrapped, so I didn't even let 'em loose. Dumped them all at the bank across the street 5 minutes later.

alonibreak had it right. I went through a pile of Canadian silver a few years ago. A BF magnet works great.

Dimes? Just can't get into those, although I received 2 silver Roosies in change last year. Nothing much appealing about them. They seem to be the forgotten coin in some applications. I've noticed at several casinos, dimes aren't used in any type of transaction. Of course, neither are half dollars, but that seems to be expected. Just quarters and nickels for the most part. Some slots are now 1 cent, but press the wrong button and you're playing 500 or more of those each spin. LOL Point is that the bar coded tickets that are spit out of those machines are down to the exact cent. Still when redeeming them, nary a dime in site. Sorry, FDR.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

I got $450 in halves from the local bank about 2 week ago. I found $4.50 clad silver. So 1% return in clad silver isn't too shabby.

Silver today! I searched $200 in customer-wrapped dimes and found 2 silver roosies.

Since 01/01/08: $1800 searched, ten 90% silver dimes, one 50% silver dime.
