I have found a bunch of proofs in boxes i have been searching. Are they worth anything? and if so how much? Will coin dealers buy them?

Not really. Impaired proofs are not worth much over face. Dealers most likely wont buy them. I keep only the best and toss the others back in the coin counter. |

Yeah, my question exactly. I thought "proofs" were all 90% silver. The Red Book says: "Silver proofs are of pre-1965 standards".
So, like Frugal said: How do you know if a coin is a proof?
Also, how do you tell a 1976S half dollar from a 1976S silver clad? My first box has a bunch of 1976 in it. |

In order to see if the coin is silver, look at the rim. Clad will have the darker copper color.
Proofs from 1992 onward come in both 90% and clad. Sooo, the rim is the best way to determine it.
I wouldn't pay more than face for a circulated clad proof. For a circulate silver proof, I'd pay melt. The numismatic value has been destroyed, and let's face it, these proofs are not rare.
That being said, there is a small market for them as fillers in coin books. I see them for sale on other forums. |

Why is it so easy to find proof halves? I haven't been sorting halves for very long and have found 10 or more of them. I don't have those kind of numbers with nickels (I have found a handful over the last couple of years) and pennies (I have never found a proof penny) |

I often get collecting albums at a discount. My local shop gets used albums and some have holes for proofs. So I love filling the holes with found proofs. I would never break open sets to put in albums! I get great enjoyment and have filled nearly all the proof holes in two half albums and have several others with less.
I have found several proof nickels and maybe more. I have found a penny or two and one dime.
I don't see any value but I think a completed album that has the proof holes filled will be easier to sell than without.
I doubt they will be sold in my lifetime anyway.
It's all fun.
Life will be very serious for most soon enough.

So I went to the coin show in Vienna near dc this weekedn and sold my proofs for about 90 cents each. Not bad. Now I am going to continue to look for them and pull them aside. |
