I have been sorting halves the last month. I've been trying to limit my turn in to an individual bank to $250 worth. Is $500 too much to turn in to one bank? What is your usual max?

What if it is a Wells Fargo or a Chase that doesnt have a machine and you have to turn them in wrapped? |

For a machine I usually wont dump more than $800 at a time...usually $400 or so at a few different banks.
As far as wrapped goes it can be a bit of a pain...the most I've ever dumped rolled is $250...carried them in a ziplock bag.
You've gotta feel the banks out...some give you the look at $500...others don't even flinch.
It also depends on how much you're sorting through and how quickly you need to turn the coinage back into cash. If you've got a week or two you can always spread it out. |

Good advice. Also, If there is more than one Wells Fargo in your city, call around to see if any of them have coin counters. In my area, half of the WF do, but none of the Chase do. |

Well I went into the Well's Fargo where I have been dumping and tried the $500 dump. They didn't seem to care about the $500. In fact, she gave me bags and told me just to bring them in bags so I don't have to wrap them. |

I occasionally dump $2000 at one branch, but generally limit it to $1000. I spread the dumps with both pennies and halves so I don't overwhelm anyone and none of the banks suspects the scale of my operation. I pick up $500 a week pennies and $2000 a week halves from one branch, and return the same amount spread over four branches of same BOA. They make it a little easier for me and provide bags for free. I think it's worth a bit of driving to stay under the radar. |
Hoard now and hold on!

If it is the heavy plastic bag that seals, look on the front. It will tell you how much it will hold of each denomination. It may hold $1000 in halves. |

If you're using bags, take consideration of how much they can reasonably lift. Those bags claim to hold $200 in nickels, which is about 45 lbs, but that's stretching it (literally - the bag starts stretching and rips ). Plus the tellers can't lift that much. So I put half the weight in each bag. |

I always limit it to what I can physically carry in one trip (2 sacks).
I also keep my bags about 75% filled (50% filled is too much paperwork). With halves, that's roughly 40 pounds. So, no more than $1500 for me.
I have been in a branch that had a head teller whine about 1 sack of $400 before. A lot of it depends on the branch and their general attitude towards customers. |

I don't like bringing more than 2k to any bank in a given week. However if you are bringing rolls be ready for more resistance.
Bags go over easier simply because the work is done and it's just a hand off. If you don't work in increments of $1000 the bank will have to sit on the coins until they can fill a bag and ship it back. So it is helpful in some cases to work out a system with the head teller.
Really Slick $4500 through the coin machine! 4.5 bags that's a riot, you would need a teller to sit by and help you for that stretch. That takes some brass to do that on a weekly basis.
