Hey guys... Thoughts on scraping cars. I have access to one or two junkers. I enjoy scraping as a hobby and any thing I can keep out of a landfill or junkyard and make money on I'm about.
What is the easiest way to scrap? I enjoy stripping wires and breaking things down but was curious as to what you've experienced and done. I also have a trailer to haul the disassembled car once done. Any thoughts?

cherry pick the rad and cat, any re-buildable parts ( starter, alt, ac compressor and such) I also cut out as much harness from under the hood as I can, pull up the back seats, you never know what you will find ( I have found gold jewelry and silver coins). Check with the yard, if they are paying more for motor and trany, you could pull than as well. It all depends on the time you want to put into it.

Thanks for that. I do have plenty of time and it seems to be relaxing to me...lol I have the room also which helps. I'd like to absolutely disassmeble the thing front to back, top to bottom. Guess I'll have to experiment and get to it. Thanks for the input. Anyone else have experience or thoughts?

I spoke with someone today who used to totally disassemble the engines to get higher prices for the different metals they contained. I don't know if it was worth his time, but they used to sell three or four truckloads of engine blocks a year.

I've taken a large boat motor down to the block and did pretty good. I've done a few transmissions also, but never a car. I would think the farther you separate the metal, the better you'll do.

Are you throwing that out?

What are the models and years. Some people pay for parts from certain cars.

Most of what I'm looking at are either wrecks from crashes or older model junkers with no real value other than scrap. I may run into a wanted model or year but I'll probably have to pay for that. My intention is to literally tear it down to the frame and then have a buddy chop it for me into parts from there. Engine & tranny down to wiring and metal accesories.

Sorry... I posted this twice but meant to post it here.

My plan is to get one car at a time (friend owns a body shop with tons of old cars), totally scrap it down to and including the frame and then get another one. I'm doing it as a hobby/stress reliever/ and then for the money. I've really enjoyed the minor scraping I've done so far and look forward to a car project.

You better do your research.....70's - early 80's Japanese cars are experiencing a nostalgia boom of sorts, and parts from them are worth some money to the right people.

IF you were going to scavenge/scrap a car, any suggestions on what you would start with? I don't know what I will have available to me but it would be interesting to hear what you would do or choose. My intention is to scavenge/scrap every bit of pm and steel that I can.

-Catalytic converter
-Aluminum/mag rims
-Aluminum-(radiator,external engine parts, engine block and transmission case itself)
-wiring/copper and brass parts..most newer cars every wire that goes to a connector has brass terminals.

Also remember..most scrapyards will pay you more per ton for scrap cars than for mixed scrap/tin..load up the car with as much ferrous as possible.

Someone once showed me that some cars have mercury switches for the under hood light..they have a small canister inside the switch that contains mercury..i've never sold any of it directly but I have sold a couple switches off cars I scrapped to a friend of mine that had a small collection of canisters for a few bucks each.

He also scrapped so many cars he started removing the gas from them and hoarding in a giant drum in his backyard..It would be nice to have a few hundred gallons in your backyard if things ever went south.

Gas will only stay good for about a year or so with stabilizer. I don't know if its true or not but he said as long as the tank gets shifted around every once in awhile it can last years and a few gallons of fresh gas dumped in can "revitalize" quite a bit of old gas that wouldn't run so good without it.
