A local town with a population under 10,000 has a metal pickup a few times a year where residents can leave out metal items and it will be picked up free of cost.

It is not widely advertised, but of course there's competition. If you don't get out there by 9AM all that's left will be light iron, sleeper sofas, a few bulky items like refrigerators and items that people put out late.

This brings me to one of my scrapping complaints: people bringing unnecessary attention to this business/hobby.

There are always several of the following left on people's front lawns:

-Grills with both tops and bottoms removed.

-Plastic drawers from refrigerators.

-Assorted glass and plastic items removed from their metal counterparts.

The problem with this is that it draws attention to both the homeowner and the town that someone else is getting there first. It's also littering and especially burdensome for the homeowner, who instead of having a convenient removal may now have to pay to dispose of the trash left behind.

It's only a matter of time before this town passes one of those ordinances making picking up anything off the curb illegal.

So do everyone a favor and just take the whole thing. 99% of homeowners will care less as long as it disappears, and the town or recycling company won't know anything was there unless it's a scheduled pickup.

This is especially true of grills. Instead of spending time taking it apart on someone else's lawn just take the whole thing.* It's faster, it draws less attention and you'll get the extra $1+ for the light iron.

*Obviously if you have a small vehicle this is not an option. But at least don't leave any trash behind or get into an argument with the one guy who does complain.

And if your city/town has one of those curbside regulations - find another source or find a loophole.

I had to read that line four times. I kept reading "Girls". I was thinking I need to get to your town....

I agree with you. All or nothing. Bad form to leave trash behind.

Hahaha, Deal. I want to be in that town with the girls with their tops and bottoms missing sitting on the curb...

The grill thing happens often around here but someone will stop and pick up the steel frame. The big problem is windows, sliding glass doors and mirrored closet doors as once someone removes the metal frame the city will not take the glass or mirrors! Then they sit out until some kids break the glass.

Our pick up is twice a year for $14.35 per month. For that much money a year you would think the city would just take the glass and mirrors....

Yeah I scrapped Detroit and the surrounding suburbs for a time and was always annoyed when I viewed those idiots that would leave a complete mess on some one's yard.
I was also annoyed with the scrappers that could not tie down a load and would draw attention by dropping, oh' lets say a BATHTUB in the middle of the road.

Straps, tarps and tools are well worth the investment. Harbor Freight has cheap tools and lifetime warranty.

Agreed. It's bad form to separate and leave trash behind.

Another good reason to take the whole thing is that you can run your route quicker and get more stuff that can be separated at home.

Thankfully I've never seen a stripped grill at the curb. One time I did leave a small mess and each time I drive past that house I still think about it. Since then I always take it all... Unfortunately I see TVs that were split open and had their yoke removed all too often.

I agree with tool investment. I am in construction, so I have tools. I recently bought some new battery tools just for scrapping. I watched "scrappers" last night. They were cutting railings with a hacksaw. BUY a battery sawsall.
