im currently building up a collection of catalytic converters to scrap for raw material. my little brother told me him and a friend got together 5 cat's from a muffler shop. your average gm's/ ford with a mercedes one thrown in. they went up to my closest scrap yard. in the state capitol so its no tiny place. the guy there proceeded to tell them that he could pay 15/20 bucks for the gm and ford ones and the mercedes cat was worth 60. obviously they left with their parts. but on the way back they started to think how impossible the prices were. so they turned around and said they wanted to speak to someone else. the other guy looked them over comparing in a book and offered them 400 dollars for all of them giving him $130 for the mercedes cat alone.
i called up the same place today trying to get an idea of which cars types to go after and the guy over the phone told me european cats can be worth up to $80, Gm's ranging from 50 to 15. he said he doesnt weigh them or measure them and goes on what engine type and year of vehicle it was connected to. which sounds silly.
this leaves me kind of boggled on how to handle a situation like this. im obviously looking at different yards. but this being a large salvage yard im kinda surprised to hear such variances.
please post your opinions.

Wow, that's a nice link. I'd heard that there was big money in catalytic convertors, but no one has EVER offered me anything more than chump change. |

I was under the impression/told that there is a small amount of a very valuable metal in the mufflers that the scrap yards make big bucks on. A friend of mine does very well on mufflers and I hope to soon as well. |

Im not a scrapper but I think I remember reading they have Rhodium in them. The price of Rhodium is currently higher than Gold |

the guys get paid to offer you chump change hoping you'll say yes. thats the game the play with everyone. its ridiculous and unprofessional.
each catalytic converter contains approximately 3 to 7 grams of platinum, rhodium and palladium. which makes them worth money. |

Can you just call up a muffler shop and ask to buy them or do you have a connection there? |

I wonder what the market is if you get together a whole trailer load of converters(2-10 thousand pounds).
Are there refiners that you could deal with? Ohio Precious Metals?
I will never have that many catalytic converters, I only have two right now.... and I'm not going to yank them off of perfectly good vehicles! :P |

I do not know whether there are still places to take it or not, but a person use to be able to break up the honeycomb (this has the PM's) inside of a converter, remove it and send that broken up honeycomb to the refiners. |
