Hey all. Looking for input on bicycles as scrap.... aluminum, steel, what are a majority of bikes made of or does it vary? Also, does the "search" button work on here in the upper left corner of the screen? Try to use it before I ask questions but it doesn't return anything...ever...lol

I think there is some with aluminum frames. All the ones I have ever scrapped were steel frames, just threw them into the pile, wheels, tires and all. |

Change the "Search In:" field from "Entire Message" to "Subject Only" and it will run (though the results will be limited to threads that have your search terms in the original thread title). There is too much content for it to search "Entire Message" on this type of hosting environment; it always times out. |

Correct. That is what I do. Too bad we can't "refine" the search feature.
Deal
p.s. My search is in the upper right corner. Are their other options? I actually have the letters "po" in the upper left.... |
Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

Careful with the bikes, Those 70s and 80s frames are in demand for Fixed gear riders, you could most likely get more for them that way. You must be logged in to see this link. |

Look out for old 3-speed bikes as well, Sturmey Archer and Sachs hubs can be somewhat valuable. The coaster brake/internal gear combination is more uncommon. Banana seats and big handlebars are also sought after by some.
Also, any time you are working with discarded bikes you need to consider that any bike may have been stolen at some point in its history, so checking serial numbers may be a good idea. |

Definitely keep an eye out for older 10-speed style bikes. I found one that I sold the Crank for $125.00. I also fix and sell some of them. |
Are you throwing that out? |

I have been selling old bikes for years now. I find them in the trash and fix them up so they are workable, not perfect. and then sell them for anywhere between $30 and $200 depending on what they are. i have sold alot of $50 bikes that I have found in the trash fixed up without putting any money into and then sold them at a low price just to get rid of them. |

Quick note on bikes, if a component says Campagnola, it's worth money! |
Are you throwing that out? |

Over here in Philly where I work, Bike thefts are huge... lots of bikes end up with no wheels and still chained to a pole. Our Public Safety units go out and take the scavaned frames, I'm going to try and get in on them if they throw them out. |
