I was thinking to get a metal detector in the near future. I have zero experience with them and never used one. I want something where I can find Gold american eagles, Platinum eagles, SAES, Silver Franklins, and Copper abes among other things. I have seen a few brands recommended on here but can you guys help me pick out a model. Also do I have to buy earphones or do any of them come with them? And lastly, where is the best place to buy, Amazon....? Im looking for something lower priced since Im just beginning and want to know it is for me
Thank you

Well I can nearly garantee that you will not find any .999 silver, gold or platinum eagles while metal detecting. They are not circulating coin. Typically what you will find metal detecting is clad (post 1964) coinage, then 90% silver coinage and then very very rarely you may find a pre-1933 gold coin. I metal detect quite a bit and most of what I am trying to recover is lost jewelry. That is where the most money is to be made from Metal detecting. I would recommend the Garret treasure ace 250 for your first detector. It is a great starter machine. I would check Kellyco.com for the best price and great package deals. If you find yourself wanting to upgrade in the future you may want to look into the minelab line of detectors, more specifically the explorer se or e-trac. |

I had to jump in on this one. I will always reccomend a White's. You must be logged in to see this link.
I would seriously look at the Prizm III.I have to date, found 4 mercury dimes and tons of change and quite a bit of jewelry. Whites' customer service is the best I've seen. Yep, I am sold on my detector and I can tell you that my buddy has paid for his machine, the MXT, several times over with his finds.... Goto the website and check out the stories and see 4 yourself and I guarantee, you won't be dissapointed.Cost is around $250 starting, or go to your local dealer and you should get a $50 discount.
Please let me know what you decide.
I'm allright now, I get a little excited about detecting! |

cwgii, it would be general use. I would be going by the beach but would prefer to be able to have equipment that is not specific for water |

This appears to be the lowest priced and most basic detector offered by whites. Should this be good for someone starting out , does it have ll of the needed basic items on it? Will it be able to find gold??? I will continue to do some independent research and will surely have additional questions. |

Garrett ace 250 is a good machine,I have one.Lots of features for the price, worked great at the beach and around some local areas. I never heard a bad word about Whites and it could be the better buy. Either way if you can pick one up for $200 bills you will have a good time with one.Maybe find a local club, the knowledge is free and maybe you could find a deal on a used one. |

Ok, i see kellycodetectors.com
Also I found another one that seems to be good for the money, the garrett ace 250 You must be logged in to see this link.
It looks like I will try to make a choice of the coinmaster or ace 250. Ace 250 seems to come with a package that includes headphones from Kellyco so maybe that will be my choice. Which one would you pick |

I was at one time a Whites Metal Detector dealer. I did not recommend the lowest price detector. get one with a gauge indicator on it, otherwise you will need to decide with just a beep. when you start the pull tabs form cans will drive you crazy and make you want to quit.
the one I have now is their most expensive detector or was when I bought it and all the accessories with it.
I offered a money back sale for a year, with not one detector returned, except for showing them how to use it.
EDIT: I have an XLT NOW. |

I guess I have to recommend a whites. I have a whites qxt. They don't sell them anymore but the closest to it not would be the whites xlt I believe. everyone in my family that I know has a metal detector has a whites and they last, my great uncle is or at least was a whites dealer.
With any brand, I wouldn't go too cheap, its not something you want to regret buying because it breaks on the first day or just doesn't work well. |

Thanks for the input from everyoe. I see Penny Pauper was posting about the ACE as I was too. I will keep all suggestions in mind. Hopefully I can find a brick and mortar that carries either brand to see them in person.
Thanks |

I am in the same boat as TXBullion. My birthday is coming up and my wife asked me what I wanted. I said a MD. So thanks for all you guys feedback on a good starter machine. I am thinking of getting the ACE 250. Not to hijack the thread, but if anyone has more input I would also appreciate it.

AG Coinhunter, mine is actually a bday present too. Its my job to pick out the model and then "ask" for it. Im going to go with the ACE 250. Seems to be a lot of happy people with it. Also, I figured Ryedeale coin has an ACE that people seems to be happy with, maybe it was fate for the ACE....?? lol |

I do really like that my Prizm III has a good discriminator and is very good on batteries. I went out to the local park this morning and dug up a ring at 6 inches. It was a costume ring, but the fact that the machine is good at this depth is a big plus with me. For the price I did'nt go wrong. I'm saving up for my next White's. You can never have to many MD's....... |

I have a top of the line Whites (V3), but bought my girlfriend an ACE 250 as she wanted something light. It is an awesome machine for the money and well worth it. It has good depth and good options. I would be willing to use it myself as a backup if my V3 goes on the fritz, and I am picky. You cannot go wrong with it. |

Where do people go besides the beach to search? I use to do this when I was a kid, but not recently. |

Brian, you really can go anywhere people go, the more people there usually the better. parks, river banks, old schools, old buildings in general. One of the places I detect is a pasture in which we know used to be the place circuses and rodeos set up back in the day. You would never know by looking at it, but its a great place to detect. |
