Has anyone sorting for a long time noticed a seasonal change in percentages?
In my town there are two giant banks with lots of branches. One uses Brinks boxes with clear rolls. The other uses shotgun rolls packed in a box with 50 holes punched in the bottom which line up with the end of the each roll, so a glance can tell if the box is full or short.
I picked up 14 boxes today, 8 from the bank with the shotgun rolls. 4 were almost completely 2007s. These boxes were date stamped 1/1/08. Each time the teller cheerfully handed over the box I cussed under my breath when I saw all the new pennies shining through. One teller was rather proud that they were all new. Before the holidays they were generally 30% copper.
My guess is it takes a couple months for penny change to find its way back into the system after the holiday rush, and after the holidays is the time of year the armored services get new pennies into circulation. Any thoughts?
Please bark out when you see the first 2008 rolls/boxes....I'm collecting these for my zinc hoard....want to know when and where they start to crop up...
I don't know if it is seasonal or not, but getting new pennies seems to come in spurts. Last year the worst time for me was late spring to early summer.
I got my first full box of 2007's that were dated 1/1/08 from brinks they must be told to get read of the 07 supply. I Wonder if the gov is starting to sort?.......Hope not but you never know Canada is.
I think if it is like last year you won't see the first 2008 cents until late February or early March. Could be the coin services are trying to move out all of last year's pennies in anticipation of the new ones coming in. Interesting thing.. last month I got several boxes of 2006-D pennies from one of my banks. This was the same bank that was the first one to give me 2007 cents last year. I figured I had finally run them low enough on pennies to get to the back of their vault.
