I was at the supermarket CoinStar yesterday dropping off my zincolns. All set up, jacket off, and pennies at the ready. As I go to pull the first plastic bag out of my box, it rips! About 1,600 pennies fall all over the floor in a high traffic area. Can you say embarrassed! Later, when things were back to "normal", and old guy staring at me says, "that sure is a lot of pennies." Little does he know.

I hear ya, when I return cents to a bank I try to bring in two $50 bags at a time. (it is easier to carry two bags than one, it evens out the load on my old back) Most of the time someone will comment on such a large amount of coins. I say, it's only 10,000 Then they will ask how long it took to save them, I say a few weeks because that is the business I am in. If I told them 30 minutes don't think they would believe me. |

That would be a great topic! What others must think when they see us. I'm sure there's some great stories out there. |

Since I only sort $50 bags that I buy from the local banks b4 they sell to brinks I get cought walking out to the vehicle with them in my hands alot.
2 weeks ago after a large snow fall I had a local police officer walk up to me while I was unloading the cart full of $700 of bags in to the truck and ask what I was going to do with them all... I replied very matter of factly, I need the weight for traction in the snow! LOL He just looked at me as if I was more nuts than he thought I was already.
Bags seem to be easier for me to get a hold of (instead of rolls) but, that is a whole other topic by itself, I guess.

I'd like to buy some cotton (canvas?) coin bags. I think it would be fun to collect them as well (different names/logos, etc.). Nice story. I thought you were going to say he thought you were robbing the bank ! |

I think I will use that traction excuse.. they will really think I'm nuts since there is no snow where I live in Northern California.
When folks give me that look at the bank when I am wheeling in or out $600 worth of pennies I just look at them and say "I've got so much money I have to wheel it out"
Starwarsgeek.. invest in a couple of good quality coin bags to cart your zinc in so that doesn't happen again. At least what happened to a good buddy of mine the other day didn't happen to you. He hauled in a $50 bag of pennies to the Coinstar intending to get a gift card. He waited 15 minutes for the person using the machine to finish. It only took $9.20 of his pennies and then told him it was full.. he had to lug his zinc back out to the car and take it home. I am thinking he is not a big Coinstar fan at this point. |

I get self concious about this all the time. I have a canvas bank bag that I put my pennies & nickels in when I leave the bank. Every time I exit the bank I feel that all eyes are on me. I hope I never get a gun pulled on me!

If a were to encountered a full CoinStar machine, I'd be pi$$ed! Should I get the bags on eBay, or should I ask for them? |

| Sometimes you can get them at the banks for free just by asking. All of the banks have converted to those heavy duty plastic bags for shipping so they sometimes have the old canvas bags sitting around just waiting for somebody to ask for them. If you can't get any, just let me know and I will send you a couple. |

Thats why you need to buy more pennies at once!!! Whe you are rolling a cart out with 14 bags of $50 on it even the robbers look at you and think "that's to much work!" lol |

I have used the CoinStar in Canada quite a few times. I haul my coins into the grocery store in 5 gal pails....I put the pails in a grocery cart and push them in.
I set the pail in the childs seat area of the cart and scoop them out with a plastic cup.
No chance for the bag to bust. |
