I had a 1984 Philadelphia mint penny, which was sorting with the rest of the zinc pennies like it should, and didn't sort like a copper. It weighs 2.72 grams. It looks normal, and it's not attracted to a magnet. It's very clean and in EF condition.
Zinc penny should weigh 2.5 grams Copper penny should weigh 3.11 grams
Has anyone heard of unusual pennies in that year?

Whenever I get 82 cents I weigh them on my digital scale to find out what they are, copper or zinc. The 3.11 grams for copper and 2.5 grams for zinc have turned out to be the average weight, not the exact weight.
I have found some 82's that weighed 3.01 grams and a few zincs that weighed in at 2.6 grams.
The cent you have might be from a planchet that was made a little too thick than normal.
Considering the thousands of cents that get punched out per hour, and the fact the cent is the lowest face value coin, I doubt the mint is going to worry about over or under weight cents.
I would hang on to that cent if I were you, keep it in a zip lock bag and write on the bag its unusual weight, it might be worth a dollar or two to a collector of odd coins. |
