In my last sort I found a black button rolled up with pennies. It weighs 2.3 grams. This is the first thing other than a coin that I have found in a roll.

With all of the sorting going on, I bet there has been things stranger than a button found.

Probably the strangest thing that I have found is a magician's penny. It is a real penny that somebody hollowed out so a dime could fit in it. It lets the magician perform the illusion of turning a penny into a dime.

Another strange thing was a Catholic Saint charm. The loop was broken off making it just the right size to fit in a penny roll. Unfortunately it is cheap and made out of tin or aluminum...not silver.

And lastly a nickel in a hand wrapped roll. The odd thing was it was so jambed in the roll that I couldn't get it out and had to tear the whole roll apart to free it. Whoever managed to jamb it in there in the first place performed an amazing feat. And what a colossal waste of time...stuffing nickels into penny rolls.

No buttons though...

I found a "moon money" penny. It features a cow jumping over the moon. You must be logged in to see this link.

Oh yeah, and one of those infamous 1974 pennies that the Ryedale machine sorts into the non-copper pile.

I found a nickel in a paper penny roll once. The roll was splitting at the seams.

Some strange red looking clear thing. Plastic you can see thru in trucking company box with dimes in there.

I love those fed boxes and hoard up pre 64 silver coins such as rolls of 64 half dollers. Maybe copper will be very expensive such as silver is.

I've found 2 penny-size Philadelphia Mint medals that used to come with the Mint Sets.

What a coincidense. I found a brown button + 42 cents + 5 dimes.

Also, a 1833 1/8th Real from Mexico. Just slightly bigger than a penny. I never would have found it by eye, same color as a penny, but thanks to the Ryedale sorter it found it for me. The thing jamed up in the shoot and there it was.

I usually collect nickels in Canada. I've had a lot of foreign coins, the best one being a new UK 20p coin.

I had one roll of nickels that had 5 dimes in it. The silly thing was that it was one of those clear plastic rolls so you could immediately see by looking that it had a bunch of dimes in it. I've also had various Caribbean coins, a Swiss coin, and one which might be iraqi.

Not all who wander are lost.

I do not think it will ever happen, but I would LOVE to find gold in a penny roll. Something like a Mexican 2.5 gold Peso would just about be the size and color of a penny.

I know someone at one of my coin clubs that found a 2 and half dollar gold piece in a penny roll.. so it could happen. Best I have done is a silver dime.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Sounds legit to me. They're 19mm in diameter, and it wouldn't look out of place among uncirculated pennies, which would go far in explaining how it got there.

Now I gotta sort MORE!

Found a fine, round, penny-sized screen in a roll today. Looks like it came out of a sink aerator. I must say that I was very surprised to see that pop out of a roll.

I have found a zinc with a cross stamped right through it. I still am looking for a cent with an outline of Kennedy facing Lincoln. Years ago I would see a few of these in change, but I never kept one.

I have found 2 of the pennies with the cross cut right through it. Haven't found the Lincoln/Kennedy Coincidence penny yet, but I have found 6 or 7 states so far.. that is gonna be a tough set to assemble from circulation. I actually found a silver dime in one roll.. next step is a gold coin.

Yep! I've found the silver, no all's left is gold......that's motivation enough to sort more: more likely to find precious metals.

The Kennedy facing Lincoln cents was the first stamped coin I found (1975). I also have two state cents, one with the Liberty Bell and USA, and one with a seven on the reverse.

Are you talking about the ones that used to come in the Mint Sets? Does it say "uncirculated" on it?

I remember the first time I found one of these, I was very new to coin collecting, and thought I had found something very rare. It didn't even have a date on it! hahaha. I tried to sell it at a coin shop, thinking I'd get paid thousands of dollars, but no, I was offered a penny for it. lol.

Well, I don't know about strangest, but it certainly takes the prize for cheesing me off the most. I found a car wash token from a town 20 miles away in a roll of Susan B. Anthony dollars.
