Anyone wish to throw out some gold abc's while out hunting. Lots of garage sales going on and I don't want to get burned. I got my loupe and a gram scale. My trusty magnet is never far me either. Was wondering on basics. Just ballpark numbers. Grades (10k-14k-24k..etc) and weights and pricing. Also, foriegn hallmarks? Anything I forgot.....don't be shy! Thanks for the info. I know others here would be interested.

A fellow named Noxx made it from Goldrefiningforum.com. I use it, and like it alot. I don't want to take credit for others work.

enter the current spot price at the top under "Price here" then enter what % of spot you are willing to pay under " Buy at X% Spot".

Then under "Lot weight" column put the amount of each karat for how ever much of each there is. You see it goes from 24k down to 6k. Then click somewhere on screen or click recalculate button at the bottom.

DISCLAIMER: THIS ONLY WORKS WITH GOLD AT $800+ PER OZt!!!! I am not suggesting you purchase at the actual calculation. This is a quick calculation to use on the run.

For a quick calculation, to guarantee your buying under spot with a good profit:

1. Determine the Karats.
2. Weigh the piece. (take into account weight of gems)
3. Multiply Karats x grams of Au. (This is the max I would pay for a gold item at a yard sale/bargain shop.)
As an example:
This past weekend one of the items I bought was a 2 gram 14K ring. Based on my formula I could pay 2gx14K=$28.00. With gold at $1200+ it would melt at better than $45.00. I paid $3.00 for it, but I know I would still make a profit if I had paid $28.00.

This is by no means accurate for actual value. Considering I am already pulling out a loupe and a gram scale, I don't want to pull out a calculator also. The quicker you get the transaction done the better price you get.
