Hey all... I'm officially blaming YOU...yes YOU for my new addiction in scrap metal and coin collecting. lol I need a fix.. here's my question. Recliner chairs and sectional sofas with recliners... SUPER heavy to move, right?? Any metal worth salvaging in them? I imagine its steel but they sure are heavy. Any thoughts. They are in the trash EVERYWHERE. Let me know what you think.

Having had to move my sectional couch a number of times....yes it's heavy...but I think the amount of time in order to remove any metal would be waste unless......you use this situation as therapy. If you enjoy tearing something apart and find it relaxing in some sort of way...then great. All of us need an outlet in one way or another. So, the effort to rip apart these thrown out pieces of furniture may do your mind and spirit more good than any SMALL amount of scrap dollars. |

For me at THIS point in my career.. its VERY therapeutic to destroy things and make a small amount of money...LOL I also feel the reward (however small it is) of saving some stuff from going to the landfill and getting reused. Its more about occupying my time and doing something constructive (well deconstructive) on my days off instead of watching the Soparanos and eating Doritos on the couch...lol Thanks for the input. |

The vast majority of the weight is wood. Personally I would not mess with it, as you would only get a few pounds of steel out of it, and then you need to get rid of the wood and cloth/leather. |

I've only recycled one sofa never occurred to me to try and scrap it.
My Wife used some of the good foam and batting from an old sofa the cat had shredded to replace the horse hair and cotton on a nice Morris type chair she reupholstered. The wooden frame makes good fire wood (and kindling) if you heat that way, are going camping or have a fireplace. If you have a forge and play Blacksmith, the springs and nails make beautiful billets of "Damascus" steel for knife blades and other functional or decorative items. |
There's profit if you melt things!! 8{> |

Now THAT is some serious recycling. Yes I do heat my house with a wood stove so you're appealing to more of what I was looking to do. Very interesting. Thanks |
