My parents have an old upright piano that is rotting away outside (moss grows on it in summer). Dose anybody know what types of metal I would be able to scrap out of it? I think there might be some brass.
The silver [is] mine, and the gold [is] mine, saith the LORD of hosts. Hag 2:8 [/b] He created it. He controls it. He gave it to us for His use. Why did we turn from sound scriptural currency that PROTECTS us?
I think the remaining keys are plastic. I know it was used in the early 70's thru the 90's. The name/brand logo has long rotted away-I think it was a Kimball? My dad said he bought it used, so it could be from the 50's or 60's.

the one i dismantled in the early 50s had little pieces of lead in the counter weights for the keys, the lead was pieces about 7/16 across and 1/2 inch high, one for each key
Well I fially started to scrap out the piano. It looks like it has a very heavy cast iron plate in it. There are some brass pegs, alot of screws and copper wire wound around the bass steel piano wires.
A friend of mine just watched a couple of guys scrapping a piano. He said the plate inside the piano was so heavy it took three people to move it. He said he thought it was cast aluminum. Please let us know what the big plate is made of and how much it weighs once you're done scrapping it.
Well I finally got to hauling the last bits of the piano to scrap yard. The copper/steel piano bass wires got me 22 cents/lb for 7 lbs. The heaviest part was the cast iron plate that weighed in at 131 pounds. I got 5 cents per pound for the cast iron($6.55). Was this a good price?? All of the other misc. steel, (screws & etc...) and about a pound of brass were put in seperate buckets to take in later when I have more.
It was alot of work to pick apart a piano. I think I'll wait a while before I take on another one.
I also found some pennies and a dime under the keys. They were all from the early '70's. I also found a token under the keyboard that had "IRONDALE INN 2" stamped on both sides. The token seems to be brass and about the size of a nickel.
I know someone that took one appart, they kept some wood work on it for wall decoration. I don't think that one had been accumulating moss for seasons on end.
