What should I keep an eye out for when looking for stainless steel? I already know about restaurant equipment (tables, sinks, etc), but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Some higher end washers have a SS drum, and some dishwashers have a SS enclosure. Keep an eye out for nuts and bolts on marine applications or many pool equipment functions. Also many big rigs have lots of SS on them and sometimes it gets knocked off on the road. I once found a mirror housing that weighed about 20 lbs@ Right now I have a piece of exhaust pipe that is SS and weighs about 10lbs. Don't forget cookware either! It's out there! |
Are you throwing that out? |

I have seen flatware that is marked stainless, but I think it is magnetic. I just generally throw this in with the tin, should I be keeping it separate? |

SS silverware is generally a lower grade and pays way less. I just stripped out a toaster oven today that had a SS outer box, so don't forget appliances. |

Keep an eye of towel bars and racks, and bathroom stall "power bars" I call them - I see these get thrown out or tossed as buildings get demo'd all the time! Usually 4-5 lb. each. |

I would assume they are cast iron, and if so you would probably only get tin price. .05 - .065 a pound, depending where you are at. |

Ductile iron and it's usually worth a couple more cents than scrap steel.
You could try selling it on Craigslist instead, you might get more from some home owner who wants to decorate their yard for their dog.
Also there is a lot of theft going around. If it looks new, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Might not hurt to notify the cops and see if city maintenance has reported a stolen hydrant. |

Around here the city's name is on all of them. I think the scrapyard might notice that! |

I would lump fire hydrants in with manhole covers - I want nothing to do with them. Better off to just leave some things be. |

I agree, I might contact city maintenance in case they want to pick them up, but I would not touch them either. |
