I found a odd penny today sorting. it is a 1986 D lincoln cent. first thing I saw was it was a gold color. I thought it was pry just gold plated or something so I tossed it to my desk to my "keep" pile and it rang. It sounds like a copper penny when bounced on my desk. Literally it sounds just like a copper. so I went ahead and weighted it. It weighs 2.45-6. I have checked a penny I have that I know is just a gold plated zinc to test the sound, it sounds like a zinc, but with the same color as the one I found.
What is it?

Wow, I don't know. Would it be good to have a jeweler or coin shop owner test it? What do you all think? It's not gold, or it would weigh more, right? But a legitimate off-metal strike would be a pretty good find in any case... |

I have a couple of cents that are off color it is a 96-d. I think it is has been chemically treated. Still get it tested, there was an artist that made some 14k cents and put them in circulation, not sure the date. |

I get that a chemical treatment could change the color as could a plating of gold, but I assume neither would make the "copper ring" and the gold plating should make it slightly heavier than 2.5 right, not lighter? |

That would be worth a testing..... the plating material could make the cent harder.... or, the cent could have been heat treated, which could have 'melted' the zinc into the outside copper layer, creating a goldish color. Maybe that would also affect the 'ring'.
But let's hope it is an off metal strike!!
That would be a fabulous score! |

There were a lot of "golden" colored cents from 1997D. I have several. Often called "brass" cents. They are sometimes offered in coin publications for a few bucks... with the high level MS examples for much more. I don't know if they sell or not, but you would think they would have a pretty good hold on what sells well if they're going to commit ad space to it. |
