Hi all just checking to see if any of you have seen bills like this. At first i thought the bill might be a fake. Can you spot what i think might make this an error?

Notice the left serial number is a little messed up. Does anyone know if this is an error. Also, is it common?

it's just a 1990 $20 bill. The left serial number has a letter poorly printed. only noticed it because i was checking to see if it was a star bill. |

I don't know exactly how the serial numbering process works, but it looks to me that the bottom of the k somehow moved up,like a wheel turned, think about those office date stamps where you turn the wheels to change the date.Maybe the l is beginning to come through below the k. I believe I read the serial process happens in a different place after the notes are printed. So maybe not a printing error. Very interesting specimin there Job.Visit your local coin shop and buy a bunch of plastic note holders so you can keep your finds safe. Bring it along and maybe someone can give you further info. |

I was just saying it looked so old because of the "redesigning" of all the bills. More like MAJORLY changing of the bills. |

I don't think it's worth that much. similar errors for $5 bills are selling for around $50. But this is a $20 so i don't know if it would sell for more than 2.5 x face... Who knows i'm just going to put it away for a while. |

I never really paid attention to the details on currency, but there is a lot of variance between where some of the lettering and seals get placed. If you look at a couple bills the seal may be a smidge to the right or left from the previous note.
Very neat. Though i don't really understand how it goes from being slightly off to being an error note. |

I agree with PennyPauper, its a "dropped digit" error, also referred to as a misaligned digit. I have seen some offered at local coin shows, but they dont carry much of a premium. Now, find a note that is missing the 2nd or 3rd printing process, and you got something special! |

I have an idea of what that means, but wouldn't be able to explain it well. I'll leave it to someone more up on it.
(like missing all of the serial number. or all of the intaglio printing. etc) |

That would be a find, I'd be very surprised if that type of mistake happens very often. |
