My new years resolution is to break 4 million pennies sorted and 1 million copper pennies hoarded. I've currently sorted just over 750k pennies. So to reach my goal I will need to sort 26 boxes a week for 50 weeks (3.25 million pennies).

Given my current stash of unsorted boxes, I will need to be able to acquire 25% copper penny boxes through September. So I'm hoping the penny laws don't change for at least 9 months.

Feel free to post your own goals here...large or small, post them all.

Updates on My Goal:
1/9/2008 - 41 of 1300 boxes sorted

Ooof - you're gonna warp the earth's crust with so much coin in one place.

My goal, subject to change, is $2917.99 of copper pennies - which is one ton.

Lofty goals. Not sure what my goal is yet. Maybe to get more efficient at working on my pile so I am not letting my capital sit idle in a big pile. So I guess my goal for 2008 will be to never allow my unsorted pile to exceed 2 tons and to work on getting it to stay below 1 ton. El Dee.. you must be hoarding uncirculated copper pennies. I think you will have to throw a few more in the pile to reach a ton to account for wear. I usually figure 300,000 copper pennies per ton.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Theoretically it's $2917, I forgot to consider wear. I just figured it at 3.11g per penny.

My plan is to put them in bags of $50 in a drum or some such.

Nice goals guys.

The only way to succeed is to set goals, If you dont set goals you will not make it.
My goal is 3 tons this year.
my wheat Goal is 100,000+ wheats before 2009.

ive never been one to set goals but heres what i hope to achieve.

i hope to sort through $10,000 worth or 1,000,000 pennies.
at my average rate of around 27.7% that would give me 277,000 copper cents in the year 2008.

400 boxes / 366 days = 1.09 boxes per day

now thats hand sorting only. the day i can find a sure way to dispose of that amount of zinc a week is the day i will order a ryedale. then of course my goal will go up.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

This is a topic i thought about posting. Good topic. I thought about what I want my goals to be this year concerning coinage.

1) Get a Ryedale
2) 100,000 coppers saved
3) $100 of pre 1970 nickels (one box)
4) 30,000 Wheat cents

Very possible if I keep my steady pace. I will still hand sort even when I get a ryedale because I want to try to make a box of 1982 zincs.

2008 Goal = 3 Additional Tons. I'm currently at 3 tons...would like to end the year at 6 tons total. It is nice to see a few more kooks out there talking in terms of tons!

Boys: At some point in time down the road...when the ban is lifted...we may have to pool our Tons and let them burn....there are a few of us pretty close to each other in the Midwest...we could feasibly have 20+ Tons between a few of us by the end of 2008. That is more than a Semi-Truck full payload...

Let's stick together.

One last thought....we should set a price point on Ebay of no less than 2X Face....let's drive this market.....like a little OPEC of the Copper Penny World.

When you get a ryedale you wont have time to hand sort. You will be spending all your extra time hunting down cents and then dumping zinkers.

But now the good news! You will have tens of thousands of CU cents and they are very easy to hand sort out all the wheats. I had about 41,000 coppers and pulled out 750 wheats. Don't even have to date search just a very quick glance at the back.

Be sure to look at all backs. I saw a BU lincoln and automatically tossed it in the memorial pile, as it left my hand I saw wheat stalks. It took a few minutes to find again. It must have been pulled from a mint set.

Be great to move into the "ton or above" category. I would have to get the Ryedale I've been stewing over, and actually total all my totals. Pennies pennies everywhere! Loose in the Brinks boxes, rerolled, and even in those large plastic bank bags. So I would have to say my goal is to join the ton club. Good luck everyone! Aim high.

One of my "fears" of getting a ryedale is "I'm going to want more and more pennies to sort". I've seen this trend in everyone here who has recently purchased one. I still will have to sort by date (just my way of doing things), but that's the fun part: seeing the dates and condition of coins.

We call it "Penny Heaven" Sounds like you just described my little shop out in the garage.. and I haven't even posted pictures yet. Would love to welcome you to the ton club. You could have tons of fun too.

I think that "Aim high" slogan used to be the slogan way back in the old days when I was in the Air Force. I am a SAC trained killer.

The good part about having that Ryedale is you are able to quickly capture copper cents and get your zinc back to the bank to convert to more unsorted boxes. You can always sort out the copper cents for dates, wheat cents, indians, etc. later. The key is to capture the copper now, while it is still available.

Fears? Naaaa- relax. It won't hurt a bit. Besides, the Ryedale saves your eyesight. Previously I hand sorted 3 boxes and vowed not to do that again. It's like digging the Panama Canal with a spoon.

I ran my copper hand sorts through my Ryedale. Some sneaky zincs managed to elude my careful sorting, but the Ryedale found them.

I only have 500 lbs of copper pennies right now. I've been getting 25% coppers per $25 Brinks box, which works out to 4 lb of copper per box. I will do 4 boxes a week this year, up from my 1-2 boxes per week in 2007. Should have 1,300 lb by the end of the year.

I thought it would be good to revisit this topic to see how we are doing on our goals. Are you behind, on pace, or ahead?

I'm actually getting very close to having all the copper pennies I want. (Sounds crazy, huh?) Storage space and portability are high priorities for me. I don't see myself hoarding copper beyond 2008, and infact, I'll probably meet my hoarding goals within the next six months. I won't stop coin roll hunting, though. It's too much fun! I'll still continue to search rolls of pennies, but on a much smaller scale. (Pulling those wheaties will always be a thrill!) My Ryedale has been good to me---undoubtedly the best "toy" I've ever owned, but I have a very specific goal in mind, and once it is met, it's back to my roots of numismatics and silver hunting.

I'm sure this all sounds like anathema to some of you.

I'm well ahead of schedule...in January alone I added nearly 1000 lbs of Cu to the horad! I've been selling off a few odds and ends from previous hobbys to fund my hoarding...

My goal is 3 tons in 2008....and I going at about 2X that pace so far...but it has only been 1 month.

I've hit my goal of 26 boxes sorted a week every week so far and most weeks I have gone over a bit. So I am a few days ahead of schedule for hitting 1 million coppers by the end of the year.

However, I will have to increase my ordering soon as I have been getting less than 26 "good" boxes a week. I only have standing orders for 16 boxes a week and they are not always good...

Wow...I didnt realize the extent to which some of you are into this, but I think it's cool. I just started in January and will take it slow, but right now I have only 3,500 or so copper pennies from 4 $25 boxes plus another $10 in rolls. I hand sort of course, so it's going to be a long process unless I get a Ryedale. But if I had to pick out a goal for 2008, I am going to say roughly 50,000-100,000 coppers based on hand sorting.

Do you realize you have a 32% copper percentage?

That is great, I average 18% You should do very well if you ramp up and go crazy like most of us.

Lol I am guessing no one else in this area is doing it yet and that might be why I have the high percentage. It will probably go down slowly as I ramp up but that's ok as I have fun doing it!

I know one other guy is buying boxes of silver halves at the bank branch I go to, so that might explain the poor #'s I get from those.

I'm already behind on my goal of 4 boxes a week. I've only added 50 lbs so far. A couple of weeks I've not had any pennies, but this week picked up 10 boxes.

Yesterday, I was assessing where I was at concerning my goals. I got a Ryedale, so one of my four goals are already met. I am still trying to make up for being behind last year, but I have been on pace (and sometimes over) every week.
