When I first bought a Ryedale a little over two years ago and started sorting $400+ in pennies a week, looking back now I think I really overextended myself in both time and capital that I tied up in pennies. After about $6000 sorted, I ended up selling my Ryedale and I'm just now getting back into copper pennies, now that I have at least a little bit of down time compared to two years ago. My personal goal at the moment is to sort out at least $3.10 (net 2 lbs. of copper) per day--much less of a hassle and seeming much less like a job and more like a hobby. What about others of you who hand-sort at this point?

I've been a hand-sorter for years. It's how I spend a lot of my spare time. I just can't imagine it becoming a business for me. It's hard to justify a Ryedale when my main purpose in sorting is to just get enjoyment out of it, and save a little for the future.
And with college looming on the horizon (two months from, well, today), copper pennies can't be the thing I am most interested in. Maybe, and this is a big maybe, when I get a job at the school, and find a sweet spot of studying, school, work and enjoying my time, I'll get a Ryedale and up the ante.
But until then, I love doing a few boxes a week, and not feeling any pressure to make sure I dump X amount at Y bank and buy Z again from another. |

I have a ryedale but I still consider myself a hand sorter. The time I spent hand sorting(without machines)has paid dividends, since I could tell the date of any cent within 1-2 years,5 max without even seeing the date.I am only able to do this by having so much "face time" with my sorts. You could machine sort millions of cents for copper but if you miss the good dates then you are missing out on a equal amount of profit. But it has at times gotten away from me and I see how if I kept my goals smaller I might have kept pace without the added stress of "having to" do the volume just because I could source them during some weeks.I have several $100's in wheat pennies and some key dates found which I wouldn't have if I just machine sorted. This is in no means a knock on the Ryedale since I now own two of them, but by hand sorting I now know what to let go and when to take a second look.I'm sure by the volume I've done some goodies have gotten by me.But I don't worry because I know that the pure copper play will pay out over time. |

Like one poster said before I hand sort because I enjoy it. I've considered getting a Ryedale but I just don't want the hassle of the volume buying and returning the massive amount of zinc. To each his own I guess. I have a standing order for 2 boxes of customer rolls a week at my pick-up bank. I get about $10.00/wk in CU. |

I hand sort. Use my Ace to sort the 82's. |

I've been hand sorting for a few years now. It's a good stress reliever and I enjoy dealing with coins. I'm a collector as well as a hoarder, and I find lot's of cool stuff while sorting. Compared to most of ya'll I do very little volume, maybe $5 or $6 FV a day. I'm just now getting back over 100 lbs. of copper after having to nearly liquidate my stash of both copper and silver about a year ago due to surgery. (sure was glad to have the hoard then!!) As I just do it for fun, I'm not really interested in getting a machine. Then it would be more like a job and would lose the fun factor. |

I hand sort, but probably at a higher level than many. I can't honestly justify buying a Ryedale because it wouldn't pay off the price because I am not in a great position to deal with large volumes of cents. |

I'm also a hand sorter, when I have the pennies I can do about $100 FV a day but my only problem is getting the pennies. |

The thing about buying a ryedale is that they don't really depreciate. It's not like you buy it and then it's worthless the next day. You can buy one of the ones andy has on here for 450 shipped sort for a few months/ year or whatever and then sell it on ebay or here all day long for 350+++. |
Buying CU cents!!!! Paying 1.2 unlimited amounts wanted. Can pick up if near Ohio area. |

Kiwi, Do you really have a hard time getting pennies from the bank or just a matter of physically moving them? any bank I've ever casually mentioned about one day placing an order for $100 or so they all said no problem like I was ordering 1 roll of them. Maybe time to look for a new bank but don't 100% know your situation so can't say for sure |

I am very small time a box or so a month sorted at most. The banks around here really don't like to give up thier coins. I do best if I ask for $5 at a time builds slow, but I do it for the fun and looking for older coins. |
Silver Monometalism is the most permanent and stable form of money the world has seen. Natural law and history prove silver value is best multiplied by gold and best divided by copper. It is only in this counterfeit currency time when the natural law appears suspended. |

Really enjoying reading all these posts. I learned so much just by reading about the penny sorting and have picked up a $25 box over at the local BofA. After going through roughly half the box, I have pulled out 10 wheaties, 2 in one roll!
It is time well spent for me and fun too..... |

still a hand sorter here...50-100 face/week. I do it for the fun and thrill of the hunt. I have also sold 3 pennies for a total of $530.00 on the bay that a Ryedale would have just coughed over into the discard pile. Don't get me wrong it's a great sorter....but it is just not for me at this time. |

Nickelles-
I had my hoard up to around $1500, but sold and traded some, and now it sits pretty close to $1000. |

Really? What pennies were they?
I think 2 of them were 1999 Wide AMs. Not sure about the other. |

Well I'm 15 so I usually have my grandma order me some but when she ordered me $1000 in halves they couldn't have them delivered for another 2 weeks! I think I might ramp it up and get a ryedale soon though. =]

I'm a hand-sorter and I also do the whole "wrap it yourself" thing. I used to overdo myself by doing 3-4 boxes over the weekend and then find myself juggling homework and re-rolling the cents. To be fair, I'm only a freshman in highschool (to be sophmore) so I don't have much homework. But really, I don't like re-rolling cents. Now I just do dimes in the plastic wrappers which are much easier because I only have to open the silver edged rolls |

OK, fill me in...what exactly are wide AMs and how rare are they? I haven't dumped my first batch of zincs yet, so maybe I can go back and see if I have any high-dollar pennies.
And just at a quick glance of pile sizes, it looks like I'm averaging about 25 percent coppers so far, so I'm pretty happy. |

Correct all three 99 WAMS. My results are not typical. I have just hit a hot streak the past 3 months. |

rodebaugh, after seeing the big money you got on a little piece of zinc with some wide letters, I began looking at all 92's, 99's, and 2000s. No luck for a long time, so I stopped because it was cutting down on my sorting rate fast. |
