It does slow me down...way down. And it is prob why I have less than $1000 CU face in the hoard. |

As most of you know already from having read my posts, I am a hand sorter of most denominations of coins.
I look at each and every coin passing through my hands and it takes me about one hour to search through 200 coins. As most of you are also already aware of, I do it for the fun and for the thrill of the hunt and to create the birth year coin projects for our son and his wife. Also, their anniversary coin jars that I am slowly trying to fill for them for some anniversary in the future. As hard as it is to find the 2009 coins, it may be not be filled until an anniversary many years from now.
I have also found some coins that a collector/dealer has been interested in, such as Wide AMs, MADs, die cracks, die clashes, etc. It gives me something fun to do as I sit home day in and day out.
To give you some idea, when we recently gave our daughter(-in-law) her quart canning jar filled with just her birth year pennies to celebrate her 25th birthday, I did the math and figured up that I had spent 526 hours just searching through rolls of pennies to be able to fill that jar.
It's a fun hobby and one that can be enjoyed at whatever level of sorting you are comfortable doing, whether that be just hand sorting or getting one of the various models of Ryedales that are currently being offered.
Welcome aboard, bsno2865.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |

I'm a hand sorter as well. I starting sorting in earnest ($50 - $100 a week) last Spring. I usually sort while watching T.V. so I don't move at the pace some of you guys do. However, I have managed to accumulate over $1600 face of copper pennies. The only pennies I've sold is about $10 face of wheat pennies at the local flea market for $2 a roll. The proceeds were immediately spent on silver. |

I hand sort too - been averaging about 4 bank boxes a week (plastic bank rolled), along with a few $100s worth of coppers I've bought here on RealCent at good prices. I get about 600 coppers and 9 wheats in penny boxes in my area. I sort watching TV like some of you other guys. Tearing the plastic rolls open and laying the pennies in my hand, I feed the pennies into my ACE which separates the coppers for me. You can get pretty good at this after awhile and I find the ACE hand sorting machine speeds up the hand sorting too. I look at the copper pile, but I discard all the zincs. Too much work to look through all those zincs.
I enjoy sifting through the coppers when I'm done with a box of pennies. I pull out all the Ugly Abes, 1982s, copper Canadians, and wheats separately. I roll all my coppers when I am done and store them into empty penny boxes when I've got 50 rolls. I find this very relaxing, although my wife wonders what I'll ever do with the mountain of rolled coppers that I've accumulated over the years.
I find sorting coppers much less work than lugging half dollars from source bank to dump bank. I've been edge searching $1000/week dimes with plastic bank rolls. Easy to do, but there's not much SILVER in these dimes in my area; however, it's an easy return to any dump bank. |

Another hand sorter here. Doing the bulk that's required to justify the purchase of a Ryedale seems like too much effort to put forth. I've been sorting for a couple of years now, and I'm getting close to the $1000 face mark. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Each roll that you open could contain an Indian Head or some other rarity.

I am a hand sorter, but don't keep track of how many I do, or how long it takes me. I don't have much of a 'stash', but my reasons for hand sorting are as follows:
1) I do not have the time to try getting into the quantities required to make a Ryedale (as good as they are) worthwhile for me.
2) the thrill of opening a roll hoping to find something really special...most of the time I just find 63-82 copper And 'yes', I have a scale to weigh the 82s so what I keep is in fact copper 82s, not Zincoln 82s.
3) I have a nice cent album from 1909 through to past 2010 .... not sure how far it goes. Its fun to find coins needed there, and as you might suppose, most of the unfilled dates are from 1909 to 1930 ... but I have found a few really nice ones such as a 1911 D.
4) I also look for the well known Zincoln errors such as the wide 'AMs', the 83 reverse DD, the 84 obverse DD (found two of those so far), the 95 P DD and others ... have found a few 98 and 2000 wide 'AMs' but haven't run across the elusive 99, 92s wide AM.
5) For me its a fun and relaxing hobby. My wife has joined me and by 'mutual consent' she does the nickles (she has her Jeff set just about complete now).

I'm a hand sorter also. I'm able to buy bags of pennies and nickels from my source bank, one or two bags pennies per week and one or two bags of nickels per month--whatever they get through their sorter. They call and let me know when to pick them up. Just recently began getting halves from Brinks--got one 40 and one 90% in the first box. I sort while watching TV in the evening, since everything is reruns, i don't have to pay close attention. |

I'm pretty new to the penny game, and I'm a handsorter on a tiny scale. Maybe $10-$15/wk or so, plus whatever I come across in everyday change. Sometimes a bit more, depending on free time. Currently just break it down by zinc/copper/82s/wheats. Digging around here a bit and trying to figure out what else I should be looking for |

Started in Nov of 09. Hand sorting is fun the thrill in the odd coins sorting Dimes or 50 cents is a kick. Between sorting an a few 68# buys i have about $500.00 The Skunks on 50 centers has me back to sorting a box of penny's per week. Have one more Dime buy to pick up then I will go back to waiting for small town little bank to fill a bag on Their counter an sort it, as I think they will call me if I'm not dumping on them. |
