Here's my story...
This past Thursday was supposed to be my day off. (I'm at work right now, BTW.)
So, first thing in the morning, I call the US Bank in the Wallingford area of Seattle and ask, "Is it true that you have a coin counter that is free even for non-members?", and was told yes.
During the mid-afternoon, I load up my car with a LOT of zincolns, and head to the bank.
I go up to a teller and ask, "I understand that the coin counter is free, even for non-members. I have a bunch, and I wanted to make sure it's okay".
The teller asked how much I had, and I said about $600 or so.
"Not a problem."
Phase one is taken care of.
I hobble out to my car and get a couple gallon ziplock bags of pennies and start running them through the Jetsort.
Sure, the thing does 2-3000 coins per minute, but the penny capacity is 'only' 5,000...
Kits, cats, sacks and wives, it turns out I had 51,003 pennies, or about 280 pounds. It took me about a dozen trips to get two bags of pennies and bring them in.
Well, for those of you scoring at home, the capacity is 5,000 pennies, and I had, well, 10 times that.
So 10 times, someone had to take the full bags out, and put new bags in. Oh, and when the machine would get full it would go, "Doo-doooo, doo-doooo" until it was reset.
No, I did NOT get an account there; I just kept politely declining the 'offer'.
I waited until I was in my car and out of the parking lot with my $510 before I started laughing.
I'm so bad...

| That sounds like a great dump bank. If I were you, I'd take them up on their offer, and be certain that they'll never kick you off the machine. |

Use them untill the demand you set up an account. Then set up one with $10 or so in it and continue untill....

Ever heard the term "don't burn your bridges"?
A little common sense would tell you this bank will learn it's lessons quickly (as others have).
You are not just burning this bank for yourself, fyi. There are probably others in the Seattle area that would like to use this resource. |

Not too bad Barry, they must really like you. I have a bank or two that will lend a teller to assist me when i show up, simply because they know i'll require the same type of assistance.
If only self-serve coin machines involved the customer also changing bags, I think we'd find tellers to be a lot friendlier. |

| If you are going to use this bank regularly to dump you should have defiantly opened an account. I am lucky the self serve coin machines that I dump at hold 3 bags of pennies before they are full. So I can dump 5 bags and the tellers only have to change the bags once. |

Congratulations on your zinc dump victory, but I am going to have to side with some others here, and agree that you should get an account and not abuse them so badly next time (if there is a next time). A good dump bank is like gold....if you can't get rid of the zinc you're dead in the water with this hobby. I don't know how long it took you to get that many zincs built up. If it's a "one off", no problem, but if you are continuing to sort, different story... you need this connection. It's important to build a good relationship with your dump bank, if you don't....it's going to be game over. Something for nothing is usually followed with nothing for nothing. I've been known to grease the wheels of the dump bank with an occational bag of Chocolates. It works. Just my two zinc cents Andy |

| No offense, but you will ruin this bank for others and your self. There really is no need to dump $500 worth of zinc at a time. Space them out. If you dont have the capital to finance your operations, find more dump banks to use. Trust me, once they get sick of you, they will cut you off. Its a two way street. |

| Im new on here, just been watching and learning. I bank at Navy Federal, they have counters there, for free, it goes directly into your account, once I dump I walk straight to an open teller and withdraw as many pennies as they have. They have 3 of those branches of which to go to around me. They will not give you any coins from the machine, only rolled from members...just FYI if any of you have one near you... |

| I've never even seen a 'free coin counter' in a branch. What does it look like? How big - the size of a CoinStar say? Is it out in the lobby where people can randomly use it, or under more direct supervision of a teller? Do tell... |

| I got a feeling they got some good video of you with a big wide grin. And, I bet they got a good mug shot from that posted with every teller with a 'bounty' on your head. Good luck next time. And good luck finding another goldmine dump bank! You'll learn. |

yeah.
I don't have that anymore. One to use or abuse.
There is a credit union that has a coin machine. But it is not self service[ :( ]. I haven't used it yet. Just stopped by there twice looking for half dollars.
The coin machine I had access to with wells fargo kept being 'out of order' and now they did away with it. Last I heard was either GONE GONE GONE, or they'll move it to new branch.
Even at $100 a dump, that would be a great bank to keep.

| yeah, you were BAD because you DIDN'T open an acct. Next time deposit the dump amount and deposit half of each dump after that. You can always withdraw using your ATM card the next day. |

Agreed- you are bad and quite ignorant. You put a real bad taste in their mouth. That's how fees get started - to cut down on inconsiderate dumpers who take advantage of their good will. It's happened here recently and 2 good dump banks have been lost for this very reason. Go buy them some candy and open an acct. Help them change the bags and carry them to the door or counter. Limit your dumps to $100 in zincs. There is no such thing as a free lunch. |

Just don't show your face there for a long time; maybe over time they will forget about the huge dump and you can start over the right way.
I have a credit union that has a free coin dumping machine (only bank I'm a member of that has that service) and I had gotten behind on my dumping. I was turning in 3 penny boxes full per dump and was doing a dump twice a week to get caught up. I did this for about 3 weeks. Two weeks ago she asked me where I was getting all the pennies and I told her the honest truth. She said they may start to monitor for that amount of coin dumping. I told her I could scale back and she said i was fine for now. Her point was taken and I haven't been back there for 2 weeks. Figure I will give them a little break. |

Forget it. go back, open the account. Deposit the money and take it out from the ATM the next morning. Leave $110 as a low end balance. (Where I am I'm told accounts under $100 throw up flags) You still may have a chance to save it. |

What.. banks with free coin coin counters? Gosh, I wish I had some of those. I agree with others here that you should open an account and deposit your dumps. Also, invest in a cart if you are going to be doing $500 and $600 dumps. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| I got 6 branches of my dumpbank near me and I try to go under the radar everytime I dump. I try to switch it up all the time. It's easier to dump $500 between 6 branches a little at a time than all at one stop. It's free for customers but all it takes to ruin that is something like that above. |

I agree with the comments. Specially Ryedale .... I honestly feel that for that kind of dumping you not only need to have an account there, but some chocolate to say 'thanks' wouldn't hurt either.

| Not only candy or maybe doughnuts in the morning, but above all be OVER friendly. But don't go completely overboard either. Small talk and smiling will go along way in the long run. Weather, sports, current events, or whatever, lay it on thick but not too thick. This, of course, is for those of you that don't have this kind of personality. I can just hear them as I walk out sometimes..."There goes that crazy penny guy again....but he sure is alot nicer than those jerks who have to wait in line more than "1" minute." Magic word is KARMA.....try it for awhile! See what happens. |
