Still kinda new at all this but my question is my main source bank is fairly small, although they do have a coin machine. Upon picking up my weekly boxes of cents from them, I saw one of the bank employees sealing up a full bag of cents from the machine. ( it looked very dark in color) This got me thinking, since it is a very small size bank, and the fact that I'm the "only collector" that ever comes in (according to them), would it be better for me to ask them if I can buy the full cent bags or am I better of sticking with the sealed boxes?

BTW I am a hand sorter...

And if I am better off buying the bags, do I buy all their coin denomination bags??

Yea I kinda felt like I should have stopped him from bringing it back into the vault and asked to buy it... I will try to go back Monday hopefully they'll still have it.... Anyone know how long banks typically keep full coin bags on hand?

I am not sure how big a small bank is to you but, I would suspect that they probably only get once a week pickup. And, yes, by all means buy the bags...it is much easier than rolls as you dont need to break the rolls open, you have a good chance for several dimes in each bag, and the copper percentages (and wheats) are usually higher, at least in my neck of the woods.
As far as buying all the coin denominations, that is your choice...I usually make an agreement to buy just the pennies, and sometimes the pennies, nickels and halves, I never buy bags of quarters or dimes.

Set up a standing order of boxes for your weekly face time, and buy the bags as well. You can buy all denominations if that's your thing, but that can tie up a lot of money and results will probably be limited. Definately get the penny bags though.

Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Great, thanks for the insight! You are right about not buying other denominations because that will tie my $ up.

I just had a bad experience with Brinks. If you can, avoid the boxes that roll the pennies in plastic. I had a couple boxes if not a bunch, that had shorted many of the rolls. After a while you don't check and just open them, so i didn't notice until i had opened most of them. The paper rolled ones seem to be of better reliability. But that's just my opinion.

I agree with Job, I managed to find a bank that deals with NFS boxes instead.
But, I did find 10 IH's in those Brinks boxes I shoved.
So many new coins in my system this last month it made me change metals.

What's in it for the dude?

FUnny you should mention the IH's. I found about that many last week. But i receive both brink and NFS. So i don't know which boxes yielded the IH's. The net loss is low so brink boxes versus neither, I would continue getting the brinks boxes.

NoCents are you not searching pennies any more? What did you mean by the metals change?

Went to halves instead.

I'm on the silver train.

Gonna wait and see what happens in a month or so and hope the percentages go back to what they were before all the 2010s hit the tilt.

I just went to my bank and asked to buy their bagged cents... They were more than happy to let me unload the cents from them. Only had enough to pick up $100 worth, I will be going back tomorrow to pick up the remaining 6 bags. I will post my findings ~ hopefully it was worth it.

BTW getting to become really friendly with the bank tellers and managers. Its a great feeling because they are actually looking out for anything interesting that I might want, while doing it with a smile.

I guess bags are the preferred choice of machine sorters (no breaking open countless rolls). After picking up all these bags I'm thinking about building my own sorter - at least it will be faster than doing it by hand...

Roadrunner - what state are you in - curious as to why your banks don't have bags? (maybe no coin machines??)

END,

Do you have a dump bank?

Don't take all those pennies sorted out back to the same bank. Don't do that!!!

BUt that is awesome. Penny bags are SO AWESOME!

I found my first silver in the copper, in a bag.

It was a Canadian 5 cent silver of Queen victoria. Date worn off. Not worth more than 50 cents in silver, but still one of my favorite finds ever!!

Take the bags every chance you get, buy them all every week. NEVER NEVER NEVER return them to the same bank. Find a dump bank that has a machine that won't let you buy and dump there. You might want to look at getting a Ryedale and a coin counter. Coin counters are a must if you buy bags and use a Ryedale. There are bent coins and gunk covered coins along with dimes, and other denomination coins mixed in and you need to remove them BEFORE they jam the Ryedale.

I have a few dump banks that will not let me buy the bags, but let me dump $500- $700 in zincs with no problems. Find a system that works for you, be nice to the tellers and good luck.

I have about 6 or 7 fairly local TD Banks that I rotate using their penny arcades as my dumps. Not buying at your dump banks is the first thing I learned when I found this great site... I learned a lot from all you guys!

I would LOVE to get a RYEDALE apprentice I just cannot afford it right now because I am getting married in a month and trying to buy a house.

SLICK - What kind of coin counter would you suggest? Because the nice teller mentioned to me that sometimes they are short of the $50 bags and he asked me if I was OK with that? I mean I figured how much could the bags possibly be off, 50 cents - max??

I mean just looking on the outside of the bag I see some nickels so I'm sure it will all balance out.

cs-10 , cs- 95 , scan coin 303, scan coin 313 , mach 3,5,or 7 . All are good for pre-running bags to clean out the junk. This will minimize the jams in the Ryedale. THere is a cs-95 for sale on the forum.

I have found that on average you make a little when you buy bags. A few dimes and the occasional nickel will find its way into the bags. I buy from DeLa Rue machines and I am not sure what is at the penny arcades.
