For many of us, regardless of what level sorter we are.. zinc disposal is part of the challenge. Some of us.. like Deal & I buy gas with our penny rolls (often a box or 2 at a time), some of us use boxes of pennies to pay bills and there are many other ways to dispose of zincs.

Though it will not put a serious dent in your zinc hoard.. I have found a fun way to dispose of a few rolls. I wonder if any other members do this. I use them to pay the bridge tolls whenever I cross a bridge. I thought they were being a bit greedy when they jacked up the tolls to $4 so I always pay using 8 rolls of pennies. The reactions can be quite entertaining.

Saturday night I was heading across the bridge, and of course had my rolls ready to go. One of the ladies with me couldn't believe I was going to do it.. the other thought the idea was hilarious. Guess which lady I will be taking out next week.

When I gave the toll taker the pennies, it did not bring a smile to her lips. She copped an attitude and got all bitchy. She said "You know I am supposed to count these!?" I said nothing.. just smiled and waited. She slams them into her change drawer and hit the button. Certainly good for a chuckle. Not quite as fun as the last time I went through. That toll taker was obviously not a seasoned RealCent member, with thousands of rolls of experience in the liberation of pennies from their entombment. She was whacking the machine rolled penning really hard against the counter.. pennies were flying all over the booth.. wish I had had the Flip video going so I could show it here.

So heed the government's recomendation and put those pennies back into circulation by paying your tolls with them.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

My dad and I have both purchased tickets to the dirt races with rolls of dimes/nickels/quarters. The ticket lady (wife of the track owner) said it doesn't bother her, especially quarters, since they need them for change at the concession stands. I haven't tried pennies; I'm sure she would accept them, but she might not be as friendly the next week

I live in Delaware and travel I-95 from Connecticut down to DC. Some of the toll booths I come upon have signs that say "No Pennies". Back in the day, I used to pay in pennies until I saw the signs. Then I started to dump my halves at toll booths, especially on the Verrazzano Bridge which costs $11 to cross.

Now, my gf broke down and bought an EZ Pass to my chagrin. I don't want "them" to know where I'm at. But, it's in her car and she foots the bill... I prefer going back to dumping my halvies at the toll booth.

I think they went to "No Pennies" for a few different reasons.
1. The nasty ones can jam up the machines.. look what they do to a Ryedale
2. The pure bulk of the coinage.. surely there is only so much capacity.. and all those coins must be processed.
3. Folks were just throwing everything in there.. I have heard of folks throwing in pieces of candy.

I refuse to get fasttrack pass also. I don't cross the bridges often.. and I have lots of pennies.

There are no tolls in my neck of the woods.

I have to take my rejects to my dump bank.

Only time I have seen tolls are on a handful of state turnpikes (West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts). I have a pretty good collection of transit and bridge tokens anyway, however ;)
