Pennies from 1968 to 1974 with "S" mintmark were in circulation--not proofs. All other memorial pennies with an "S" mintmark are proofs. It shouldn't be too hard to tell the difference. The proofs REALLY stand out. The proofs have a much higher relief and mirror-like finish than normal business strikes. "S" Nickels from 68-70 were in circulation, but all other post-1954 "S" nickels were proofs.

Hi,
You can buy The Official Red Book, A guide book of United States Coins.
You can also do some Google searching for keywords of Proof coins, proof coin mintmarks, etc. You will find tons of information. Generally, a proof coin is going to have a mirror like finish, not just bright and shiney, but like a mirror. You can see yourself in it. Usually, proof coins you find while CRH'ing are going to be impaired proofs as they have been out in circulation. Some people save the proofs they find, others do not. Not all "S" mints are proofs. Since 1975, all "S" mint lincoln cents were only made as proofs, Prior to 1975, there are regular and proof "S" Mint Lincolns out there. I think with "S" mint nickels, anything after 1971 was only issued in proof.
