i got 2 boxes today from my credit union, and when the teller brought them out, she asked if i would just rather have the bag(s) they just pulled from the coin machine in their lobby.
my first thought was no, that i know i dumped only about $25 of zincs a few weeks ago so others probably do too.
my next thought was they've not blinked really at all when i got in to get a couple boxes, and if that's easier for them, then i'd do that. plus, it'd save the time of unrolling...
i really just wanted to make it easier and/or do the bank a favor (??) by taking the bag, but i certainly didn't want to get stuck with someone's zincs either.
pertinent info #1: couple weeks ago they were out of boxes, someone had come in earlier and got 10 boxes. so this credit union is probably on at least someone's radar.
pertinent info #2: the coin machine is 9% for 1-4 star customers, 4% for 5-star, and free for 6-stars. basically if you financed a car, you're a 5, house and you're a 6. i dunno how that could/would change whether people would dump there or not. i'd assume you wouldn't sign up there just to dump if you knew you'd be paying the same as at any random grocery store.
pertinent info #3: like i said, they've been great. teller even said, 'no i just thought it'd be easier for you because i know you look through them, and no one's gone through these because they're coming straight from the machine into the bag'. i thanked her and said if it was easier on them, i'd just get the bag. didn't feel like explaining the whole, 'but i don't want a gigantic zinc dump bag'. also, it was the vault manager i think that asked her to ask me if i wanted the bags instead.
soooo, paranoia? or does it not matter?
edit: would it be out of line to say, 'i'll take the bag if i can look at it first'? and then if it's all shiny then pass?
like i said, i really don't want to really upset me to the point of seeing yellow anyone off, as it's the only bank i go to, and probably wouldn't sign up at another as it probably isn't that important to me.

With my recent luck on .50 cent boxes I take bags when I can, bought $500 dime bag today an Six silver dimes 1 is a barber with readable date 1907, not done yet. This is my dump bank 18 years a cust, Tellers run the counter but I do 500 to 1000 per week of half's, its ordering that is the problem.
good luck on your bags. |

I would love to get bags but none of my banks offer them. We have had postings where someone found a gold ring once.
So I would definitely do the bags. |

Bags are the only way to go. I would have taken them to see what kind of copper percentage was in them. If you are getting pennies to sort from them it is not easy to dump there also. Most banks don't have a problem with ordering coins for you to sort as long as you don't bring them back to them and dump them on them. If they average 3 bags a week going to the FED and they ship out on Thursdays you might be able to work it out with them so you bring in 3 bags of your zincs on Thursday morning and take home the 3 bags that they accumulated over the week to sort. That way they are still only sending 3 bags to the FED. I do that with a couple different banks I bring in 4 bags every week and take home what ever they accumulated for the week. You mentioned the sliding scale on the fees to dump, are you being charged to dump? If you are look for banks where you can dump for no charge. I am lucky enough to have several banks that have the self serve coin counting machine in their lobby. |

Those are actually preferred; maybe you will end up with a gold ring in there :-) |

How about taking both the bags and the boxes. If this is someone elses dump location you will find out. Also I would find another bank so that you could pickup and dump at different locations. |

Have you checked the credit unions in your area for possible dump sites? I found one a month ago that will allow me to dump up to $100/day in change without any fees. The teller dumps it into the machine right on the spot and gives me the cash (no crediting your account days later like B of A) |

wiper, welcome aboard. like ND says take the bags that come from the machine. Whats the worst you can get zincs. Even if you just sort quick and turn them back in you can develop a system. At my credit union I bought bags on Monday a.m. I return all my zinc on Monday afternoon. Back to Brinks on Tuesday with mondays dump. My credit union doesn't want me to take rolls as the cashiers have to roll them and it takes time. Most credit unions don't order pennies and tend to be guarded about giving out rolls. Seems someone else has found my credit union and is using it as a source even going as far as buying my bags. Now I am bummed and they (credit union) are the recipient of all my zinc. |

Get the bags. The worst that can happen is you'll learn if it's someone's dump bank. |

Lucky dog! In my neck of the woods you can only get boxes. On top of the that the banks within my area only take rolled coins. Just found a bank approximately 30 miles away with a coin machine in the lobby. Heck of a trip just to make a dump. |
