Went to my bank and requested two boxes of pennies and the manager said give him the $50 bag...she obviouly liked the nicely stackable boxes better. Said bag is straight from FED.
The bag is tied closed with heavy twine which is crimped closed with lead. It has a tag that says 1974-P and stamp dated 4-2-74. The bag says: CENTS $50 U.S. Mint Philadelphia 1973 which is blacked over 1974
Bag also has March 22 1974 date stamped on it.
What should I do with bag?? Does it have any value beyond the copper pennies it holds?? I assume it contains all 1974's. I felt rolls through bag and they are all shotgun rolls.
Thanx for any input.

I would weigh it to see if it is at least all copper. If so it should weigh about 35 pounds. |

I think this bag may have been opened some time ago. US Mint Bags of pennies were date stamped, but were loose in the $50 bag. |

Hi Country
You may be right...the tag references a local bank so they may have opened to inventory/roll. Called back and they are holding three more bags for me. When I open one I will let you know what I find. Head teller said a lady brought them in after her husband passed away. We shall see..I'd be happy with either rolls of 74's or all rolls with 74 and prior which would yield a ton of wheats. |

Picked up other bags>> only auction I was able to find that had rolled coins and seal like mine. See the second picture with twine and closure. Will post pictures when I get a chance as well as weights.

The original US Mint sealed bags of cents that I acquired from the US Mint in 1980 (via a special order from my local bank) were in canvas bags that were sewn across the entire length of the top of the canvas bags and the cents were loose inside. I'm pretty sure that bags that are rolled have been previously opened, rolled, and sealed by a bank (or commercial business) and then inventoried and re-sealed with twine and closure. In the old days, closure of opened canvas bags was made with a LEAD closure mostly without twine. Closure clasps made of plastic and twine are recent closures of an old canvas bag. |

While a true mint sealed bag is preferable.. a bag full of OBW rolls is still quite desireable and has value. Are all the bags 1974-P? Too bad they were not 69-S. I would certainly be interested in trading for a few of the bags to add to my hoard. |

I would hold! Don't sell yet and give them at least 6-9 months before you pull that trigger. |
What's in it for the dude? |
