I just found one of those and it was a plastic dime and of course it jammed in my ryedale. Very light weight and a copper that was behind it caught up, and you know the rest.

Here is where you can get your play money. You must be logged in to see this link.

This is from their website. (fake coin and paper money)

I found what I assume is a Zinc Plated 1982 D. The copper plating was not removed...the features are too sharp so I am guessing this penny is zinc in the middle, then copper plated, then zinc plated again.

I am going to try this experiment soon. How to zinc plate a penny and how to give a penny a gold colored finish:

Horgad,

Andy and I should make a trip down to Indy...bring 4 machines and have a sort fest....knock out your pile in 1 day.....like a PENNY SWAT TEAM!

I laugh...but if there was a big coin show in Indy....

I've met 4 other hoarders on this forum...have talked on the phone with another 7.

I'd love to have a Mid-West Hoard Convention...meet up at some central location...rent some rooms.....bring/order a massive pile of pennies....sort....get drunk.....too bad all hoarders are dudes....

I think you have the right idea by leaving all the wheat pennies in your hoard. Once the weather warms up (I am not crazy about dump trips in bad weather) and I get all my ducks in a row (tax time has crimped my cash flow), I am going to try and double my hoarding efforts by only doing a single machine sort and saving whatever falls into the "not zinc" bucket and not caring about all the extra stuff in there. There will be plenty of time after the copper penny is no longer available for 1 cent to refine the concentrate if wanted or needed...

I think that it would great to meet up with some fellow hoarders(I've been tempted to do so before), but I am always torn when it comes to revealing my ID. That being said I would be hard pressed to say no to a convention that included both pennies and beer.

I posted this on another line, but has anyone found 1983 copper cents using the sorting machine. these are collectibles that were accidentally made? Just wondering about the frequency in circulation. thanks.

Hey Cessna sign me up for the MPH(Midwest Penny Hoarders)convention. We could all bring our Ryedales and get a Brinks truck or two full of pennies, couple of kegs of beer and we could have a heck of a time. We could have seminars on how to pick up unsorted pennies, how to dump zinc, how to store your copper, what the outlook on the copper market is. We could have contests to see who could sort a bag the fastest. What do you think?

COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!

SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested.

Maybe there could also be a contest to see who could unroll a box of pennies the fastest. Those guys that get them loose in a bag would be at a serious disadvantage in this event.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Sign me up. I don't drink, but I know how to have a good time....horgad, I've always been leery of revealing my I.D. as well. I have had dealings with a few on this board. So far so good. One of the few places where I have revealed the real me or whatever. I think a meeting would be kinda cool....If we came up with enough pennies to "group sort", probably make the news in some locations....I volunteer to take all the zincs to my dump bank. They have always said ANY amount of coin is okay....I say let's test them out!

The way that I sort, I would be lucky to know it if I found one. Most likely, it would get sent back to the bank with my zincs. I date check all my coppers and any "zincs" get picked out and rejected.

You know...the sessions you mention sound like a joke...but you're right...those would be fun topics to cover as a group. It would have to be a drive-to-event due to the equipment and penny weights...

I'm thinking Chicago Area.

I would support a Mid-West penny summit, To learn how to dispose of zinc, a interesting time, and to learn more than I do now.

Maybe if we timed it to coincide with a big coin convention like Central States or an ANA convention it would allow more of us to attend. That way the ladies wouldn't think we are just going off for a wild weekend with our buddies from the penny board.

I struck silver in a penny roll and I only had to look through 1.2 million pennies!

1914 English six pence made out of .925 sterling silver found in a machine wrapped roll (it is just the right size):

Congratulations horgad! Welcome to the silver club. I have only struck silver twice so far.. but neither was as cool a coin as yours.. a silver Roosevelt and just recently my first mercury dime in a penny roll. 1 silver per 1.2 million pennies is better than average.. I think I am running 1 per 1.5 million pennies. Now I have another coin to add to the list of ones I have yet to find in a penny roll.

Thanks. That coin is one nick on the rim away from being a $10+ coin. As it stands, it is probably a $2 coin. Anyhow, that is one coin I will probably never sell...

WOW! My Dream....Horgad and Hoard Copper by the Ton you guy are serious. I think my wife would call me a shrink if I were to accumulate that many boxes. I would love to convert more of my fiat into boxes and have as many as you guys do. If this is your unsorted I can only imagine what the hoard looks like... If I ever reach that point and my ol lady starts ranting I think I'll show her your piles so she knows I"m not the only one (if that o.k).
Definitely have a goal to reach for now. If there are any pennies left out there. Great photos thank for sharing.

With all the duds everybody has been getting lately, horgad and I are looking pretty smart right now. Glad I set aside a small stash.

I might be willing to come to the first annual BYOP Sort-Fest. I'm not a big drinker (never did learn to drink beer) but I do occasionally imbibe, so this would be fun too.

We could have a contest after the Sort-Fest to see who can dump the most zinc the fastest afterward!
