Are you guys saving the 2009 nickels as you are coming across them in your sorts?
I just found my 2nd one.

I'd save every '09 (and '10) Nickle I'd find.
I've yet to find either, and I've got 2 Tellers from different banks looking because they find it strange they haven't seen any out here either.
They are also looking for '09 and '10 dimes, haven't seen any of those either. |
There's profit if you melt things!!

According to the production figures generated by the US Mint, there were 86.64 M nickels producted in 2009. Perhaps they all are sitting in a warehouse somewhere because like you, I have not seen a single one.
If you are really searching for something rare ... Find a 09 Kennedy Half ... Both the P's and D's are more rare than the elusive 50D nickel.

Oh, and by the way .... According to the US Mint, there have been "NO" 2010 nickels made thus far. (Other than those they make for special sales in mint sets.)
The mint production figures make interesting reading.

No they aren't. I mean sure they have under 2 million for each mint, but the 50D has been in circulation for 60 years, meaning less out there. Also, the 2009 Kennedy Halves aren't released for circulation, so it's a completely different way to collect. |

I'll save one if I find one! Just found a 2009 dime the other day. So that's the first one of either. I have a bag of nickels at home waiting to be searched though. Maybe one or two are hiding in there!  |

Maybe the mint is hoarding them and will auction them off at a profit.
They in fact did this in 1964 with 3 million rare Carson City silver dollars they had in storage

YES, I am saving every 2009 coin I can find as I have two different jars for coins that I am saving for the kids' future anniversaries. Sure wish we had known that 2009 would have been a hard year to find the coins, as I would have told them to get married in 2008, instead. LOL 
I have found two 2009 nickels in my searches. On April 30, 2010, my husband finally received four 2009 dimes in change, the first to hit our household. I went back and they sold me a roll, that was all they would do, and no more of the 2009 dimes in that roll.
Seems most of the nickels and dimes from that year ended up in PR and then went on eBay to be sold for a profit.

| PreservingThePast- You got that right. The dude from PR made an absolutely killing off all those nickels and dimes on Ebay. Can't really blame him. Apparently he was in the right place at the right time. By the way, I also saw that guy selling 2010 pennies well before the release date. Good grief! |

| All the tellers I've talked to just scratch their heads when I ask about any 2009 nickel or dime sightings. They have all told me they would keep their eyes out for some but no leads as to when my area will be getting any. |

Same design as the 2008 nickels, just the year change, of course! 
It's my understanding that this is a fairly low mintage year for nickels, perhaps going back to amounts minted in the 1950s.
PennySaved...not sure as to the value of one 2009 nickel. You could ask at a coin shop, but most won't buy unless they are truly uncirculated coins. I did have one guy (collector) say he would pay me 50 cents for each 2009 nickel and I kindly declined his offer.
