Hi, I'm new to the game and am not sure what to do with my insulated wire. I have about 60 pounds of it and am debating if it's worth stripping, right now I'm leaning towards sellling it as is. I know that alot of it is copper coated aluminum, will the yard accept this as insulated wire or is it something else? Any advice regarding insulated wire will be much appreciated.

For the yard to accept it as insulated wire it needs to be copper, not copper coated. If it is copper coated but you cannot tell, you might get away with selling it as insulated copper. If it is clearly insulated aluminum wire, I would just throw it in with the rest of your tin scrap. The rest you can get anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar a pound or so, depending on the yard. |

I always strip it. If you find a fast way to get it done, it is well worth the extra time. |
What's in it for the dude? |

It's been a while since I've sold insulated aluminum wire, but I'll offer an estimate of what you might get. I'm going to guess that you'll get $10 as is and $30 if you strip it, so it depends on how quick you can strip it and what your time is worth. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. |

I strip any wire that I can do easily, the rest goes as insulated. No sense spending 6 hours stripping wire for $10 worth of copper. |
Are you throwing that out? |

Thanks for all the input! I'm surprised to find out that the majority is copper coated aluminum. What are some sources of wire that are almost always pure copper? Also the best way I've found to strip wire is to use a small exacto type knife and cut straight down the length of the wire. Is there a better way? |

Haha, no I can't do that! Part of the reason I like scrapping is because it's good for the environment.quote: Originally posted by thogey

Actually, currently we're importing into China insulated copper wire, and we prefer no stripping. If anyone interested can drop me an email: ronlin1@mac.com
it has to do with custom clearance. |
