I have just recently started sorting for 98-00 AM’s . I hand sort my boxes and have a cup just for them. At the end of 1-2 boxes I put a loupe to my right eye and work through the cup. I have probably done this for 10-12 boxes so far. My finds puzzle me. The rarity from least to greatest goes in order from 2000-1998-1999 according to the literature I have read.
My finds: 2000-1 1998-2 1999-2 How and why have I been able to find two 1999’s. Is this just luck or are they maybe not as rare as people think? I mean the 2000 and 1998 only bring 2-7 bucks on ebay in circulated condition. ….But I have seen the 1999 bring over $200 raw and circulated?
Just want to see what you guys think? Is it time to sell the two 99's I have found?

Awesome finds there! I'm a small time hand sorter, and I just started looking for the wide AM pennies only a few weeks ago, and so far I have only found 1 98 Wide AM. I think the apparent rarity comes from little people searching for the coins because the difference is not as obvious as other varieties collectors watch out for. From what I've read, it seems people find one wide AM for every $50 to $100 sorted, but the two 99's does amaze me for sure! |

Well, I have checked for Wide AM's from about $500 worth of pennies and not found a single one of any type so maybe you are just running over average. |

That's great that you have found so many Wide AMs, especially the 1999 as it is much rarer.
I was lucky enough to get one in change and sent it off to be graded. It came back an AU58.
Selling...that's something you have to decide for yourself. But, I do know from listening at the coin shows I have been attending this past year+ that the price for coins as a collectible has been going down as the market is soft right now for them as it seems more people are wanting coins that are bullion.
If you are an eBay member you can see what they have been going for on eBay sales lately.
I haven't sold mine yet. |

I used a new company called ICG (Independent Coin Graders -- You must be logged in to see this link.) that was recommended to me by CONECA; I'm a member of this coin error organization. However, many on this forum aren't familiar with this new company and offered opinions that I should have used one of the more established grading companies.
I am beginning to see more and more graded coins by ICG in dealers display cases at the shows I am attending. When they graded my coin this past fall, they were quick and very reasonably priced.

Oops...forgot to include this.
Please understand I am not saying you should use this particular company, but you did ask who I had used. That should be your own decision. When I reread to make sure my post showed up correctly I realized that it might come across that I was pushing you towards this particular company and I in no way want you to feel that way. I was very happy though with the service they provided me.
Why not ask around at a few local coin shops to see who they recommend using? |

Yes. It was written up on the CONECA page that I had received this coin back in change during a day visit to WDW. I also found a 1998 or a 2000 Wide AM on the ground at one of the gas stations/convenience stores that are on Disney property. I have no idea if all locations are serviced by the same coin service or not but these were a few months apart and I thought it was cool that I got two of the three Wide AMs on Disney property. |

Thanks PTP, I have seen ICG before....they have gained some ground in the coin world.
All the Morgan dollars that I have are graded by pcgs. I thought I would like to go with pcgs.....but they are pretty darn expensive and the only dealer that accepts them in WV is kinda well....hmmmm.....(not rude but not real personable). I guess it still wouldn't hurt to ask. My second choice after a little research would be anacs. No nead to be a member or dealer to submit to these folks.
Best case senario:
Pcgs certify both 99 WAM's at EX 45 or better. Keep one (the better one), sell the other. Make enough money to pay for the cert fee's, slip a few bills in my pocket, and ride off into the sunset with my cert. 1999 WAM. |

Rodebaugh,
I wouldn't sell it if you don't need the cash. Even if you can get more money to hunt for coppers/errors what have you. If you can hold it I think it would be a nice investment both in value and the size the little object takes up is pretty good.
just my two cents. |

That is what I do, Penny. Problem is, it appears everyone has better luck than I do. Got another $50 at home to sort tonight, maybe I can pull my first Wide AM out of these ones. |

Thank you! I feel very privileged to have found it. Considering my eyes and newness to this hobby, I put it in the minor miracle category.

PennySaved...I closely inspect (to the best of my ability) all coins {and currency} that pass through my hands. I know I miss some errors as I just can NOT see many errors {like RPMs) with my vision problem even with me using a lighted stand magnifier and various powered loupes.
You never know what could be found. I look for rotational errors, check to make sure it isn't a mule, look for doubling, Wide AMs, Close AMs, counter clashes, struck through grease, MADs, etc.
Any of you saying you don't have the luck of others finding these things, all it takes is ONE coin and you are on the scoreboard.
I saw a coin at the Sarasota coin show that is a Triple Strike (or whatever the correct name would be) that may end up being a true one of a kind coin for that particular coin/particular year. There are some listed for other dates, but so far through all research, this dealer has not been able to find another one for this particular date. I was able to hold it (it was slabbed) and it was so exciting to me and scary at the same time that I was able to hold something so rare!
So for my enjoyment of this hobby, it is that I check every coin over carefully to the best of my ability so that I can go to bed at night with no regrets that I might have passed over something really valuable. This may sound corny but I also say a little prayer that if I have missed something really valuable that it will end up in the hands of someone that could see the error and would know and appreciate what they have found.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |

Penny, I think it is worth it if you put all of your 98,99, and 00 plains aside then work through them with a loupe (10x or better).
jwray, your day will come. Don't give up yet......i am still waiting on my first indian.
I plan to put pics up very soon of my finds.

PTP, I've found 4 1999 Wide AM's and over a roll of each 1998 & 2000. I sell the 1999 as soon as I find them, I don't collect errors or die varieties and I use the profits to buy coins that I do want for my collection.
I guess what I'm saying is... What do YOU collect? Even if you collect varieites I can't see why you would want 2 of the same...why not sell one and buy a coin you need. |

The 1999 Wide AM's are a great find. Make sure you check 1992-D Lincoln Cents for the close AM variety. They are scarcer than the 1999 wide AM variety, and will fetch a good price. |

I haven't always hand searched. ANd I have, at times, skipped over error searching for time's sake.
But I've probably checked 1000 or even 2000 1999's and never found one. I don't check the other WIDE AM's.
I check for the 1984 and probably checked 2000+ of these, nothing yet.
Could just be in the general area where most of these errors were distributed way back in 1999. Pennies pretty much stay in the same area their whole life. Luck of the location!!! perhaps. |

Bman...not sure where you got the idea that I have two of the 1999 Wide AMs. I have only been fortunate enough to find one of those and I had it graded. Now, I have found a few of the 1998 and the 2000 Wide AMs and I have traded with a guy that has a place at the flea market and he also goes to the coin club that I have visited.
What do I collect? Anything of interest. The only coins I have in an album and am working on filling it at face value is the Jefferson nickel from 1938 - 1964. The rest that I collect...I am saving the birth years for our son and daughter(-in-law), mainly in US pennies, and half dollars for the daughter(-in-law), and the 25 nicest I find of all US coin denominations for the son's 25th birthday, then moving on to a birth year coin project for each of their 30th birthdays as well as an ongoing project for their wedding year, 2009. I also enjoy searching through the foreign junk bins at the shows to see what coins I can find in their birth years (and maybe soon their wedding year) and I am saving these for their 25th birthdays and future birthdays and future anniversaries.
I just got a 1909 and a 1913 US Dime for a very reasonable price at the last coin show. These are for sentimental reasons only. That is probably the basis behind most that I choose to "collect". It has sentimental meaning to me or I like the shape or design on the coin. These coin gifts I will give to our son and his wife will not be collectibles, they will be gifts from the heart.
What do YOU collect?
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |
