Bank Teller's response to finding out Frugi hoards pennies: "We live in a capitalist society and everybody wants to make money, just because it's easy doesn't make it right." I told him that it is hard to resist keeping 2 pennies that together are worth about a nickel. He shrugged and said, "I don't care and would never intentionally hoard pennies and it is unpatriotic to "take advantage" of our country at a time when it is caught up in a war fighting for our freedoms."
Here's a few responses to the bank teller: 1. The copper pennies have already been spent by the US government. They don't have to mint more of them to replace the ones they have. There are plenty already in circulation. It's not my fault the government decides to spend money on soemthing they shouldn't. They can also change to a cheaper composition any time.
2. Our tax dollars have been spent bailing out the S&L's and will bail out all these banks that were involved in these sub prime interest (SCAM) loans in a time of war. That is not patriotic, and will cost the government billions more than all the coins ever minted.
3. The bank teller has no right to decide what denomination you choose to have your currency in. I believe the issue should be addressed with management.
4. I believe in the American penny, while other don't and drop them on the ground and leave them. I pick them up because I believe they have value.
5. I collect the coins for their numismatic value. Do you get mad when others collect the state quarters? Why is it ok to collect quarters but not pennies?
6. Several years ago, there was some guy I believe in California that bet his brother he could collect 1,000,000 pennies ($100,000). He did it and then tried to cash in the pennies and the bank would not accept them. Seems like double standards.

Good ones. But as tempting as it is at times, don't tell anyone you don't have too that are hoarding coins. That teller could get his address and set him up to be robbed. Or if that is the way he feels, that teller could report him as a hoarder if or when it becomes illegal to do so. Loose lips sink ships.

I agree that the less people know the better. I don't consider myselfa hoarder. I consider myself a numismist (coin collector). |

Ha ha - the teller illustrates that people that work in banks are ignoramuses. All you have to say to any such teller is this:
"How is it unpatriotic to hoard coins nobody else wants, or even accepts? All those gazillions of $1 coins gathering dust in bank vaults - I guess banks are unpatriotic, too."
*OR*
"Well, the government causes inflation. It's eroding the value of the money I keep in your bank. I'm just staying even."

Freedoms?
Like the 800 year old Habeas Corpus?

An update.
The teller is still employed there. I have no idea if he was punished in any way. This is my dump bank and he is the bag changer on the brinks machine. I do not think he was doing it before our incident, but he is now. I go to this bank 4 or 5 times a week. Somebody must really want these coins to waste so much man hours having these bankers change these bags so often especially when I come in and cause it to be changed at least one extra every day just for me. These machines are catching on and banks all over are getting them. I bet soon these will seperate Cu from Zn. Either way the teller is still there and is nothing but smiles every time I see him. I smile everytime he is on the floor huffing while "working".
Also I could not believe it this machine today when opened I noticed it had a half dollar bag. I peered in and believe it or not mostly all were silver. I left my name with the manager who is going to call me when it's full and will sell it to me at face. ( it was almost full).
I also noticed in the half dollar bag a hong kong 2 dollar coin, so apparently the brinks machines take these as half dollars. I am not sure if the value is less than the face of the Hong Kong dollar, but is worth it two find out, although I am in no way advocating anyone try this. I am only saying that the compositions of the two coins must be close, for educational purposes only. |

One US dollar is worth 7.8 Hong Kong dollars. So a 2 dollar Hong Kong coin would be worth just a hair over a US quarter.... |

| It kind of seems like justice then, that the bank teller is having to all that extra manual work. |

Frugi, A lot of those high speed sorters sort by size rather than composition. So the Hong Kong piece dropped in that half dollar bag because it was the right size. You may want to take in enough half dollars to fill up the bag the rest of the way. That way they won't accidently sell the bag to someone else. I think you should give your favorite teller a little Christmas present.. take him in some cookies or something.
The reason you are seeing more coin machines in the bank lobbies is not because they love us serious sorters so much (though it is certainly darned convenient), it is because of a move by the banking industry to get more face time with their customers. Originally they tried to get rid of the 80% of customers that were not making them lots of money. Recently they realized that is much easier to sell their profitable products to their existing customers than to try to develop new customers. This is why you are seeing more coin counters in the bank lobbies now. It is so they get you to come into the branch so they can try to sell you that new credit card or equity line. I can't wait for this trend to hit my area. Still no bank coin counters for me.. but it is only a matter of time. Guess I will just have to hobble along with my Mach 7 and Glory machines until then. |

I just got an idea. Hook up my ryedale (the zinc side) to feed into my Glory coin counter, hook up a bag and stop sorting every $50 on the counter just long enough to change the bag.
Problem is, the sorter is fast but the counter is even faster. Maybe if I got another ryedale. |

| You stole my idea Dan! That is exactly what I have been doing the garage conversion to do. Now I just need a few more Ryedales to feed the counters. Actually, you never have to shut off the sorter. You just shut down the counter long enough to switch bags and allow a few coins to build up in the hopper, then just switch the counter back on. Now if only some of my banks would get some of those self service coin counters like Frugi's bank.. I could do some serious zinc dumping. |

Very true! It is an organized movement among bankers, and in some cases, I love it! There is one bank I go to---they have a fantastic free counter in the lobby---and whenever I'm there, they're always trying to push a credit card on me, but I always say no. But after I say no, they give me free popcorn, lemonade or coffee, and goody bags of pens, magnets, letter openers, and other junk. I try to pinch every penny, so I don't mind the extras. If I'm hungry, I know which dump bank to go to. haha. |

Thats good. Some banks have cookie dishes at the begining of the line so I always grab one to munch on as I wait. If I get the coins i like I only take one more as I leave. If the teller was rude or uppity I take TWO
One bank I visited had big soft bakery made cookies with chunks of chocolate. The tellers were nice but i still took two. |

HCBTT, Item 6 in my original note. Here's the article. Maybe you can contact this guy. See if he still has his $10,000 in pennies. He lived in Los Angeles. It's been a few years. You must be logged in to see this link. |
