I see that a auction is going on ebay now for $200 face of unsearched nickles. Current bid is $240, are nickels that hard to get that they bring that much more over face? 260583967442 is the ebay number.

I don't get the impression that nickels are that hard to get. I have no trouble with my $10 - $20 nickel purchases and I'm pretty sure that my main bank would order $200 worth for me if I asked.

I think that the bidders are fixating on the potential for war nickels and buffalo nickels without realizing that these are the exact same nickels they can buy at their local bank for face value. Also, I think that many people are so used to dumping coins at the bank that it never dawns on them that they can actually buy coins from the bank.

He got $240 for $200 worth of nickels.
But I don't think he really made much money on that deal in the end.
eBay fees are about 9% ==> $22
Paypal fees are 3% ==> $7.20
Seller gets only $10 and Ebay makes $30.

It does not make sense to sell coins or bullion on eBay.

I see no problem with the sale. Buyer is happy, seller is happy. Money is money after all....

I know that there is no problem with the deal but what I can't understand is why not go to a bank and get them for face. 20% over face to me is more than it's worth.

Maybe the buyer lives out in the boon docks and the closest bank is 30 miles away and he just read an article about hoarding nickels :-)

Interesting. I've sold a lot over the past 10 years or so on eBay. In fact, between 2001 and 2005, I sold on eBay full time. I like to say it was when I worked in my underwear all day and made 6 figures (gross, not net!).

Right now, I sell things on eBay that either cost me nothing or close to it. The money I make gets split 3 ways... to my bank account, to buy Silver Eagles and to buy books on finances, survival, etc dirt cheap.

I also plan on saving up some of my eBay sales $$ and buy a new metal detector and a Ryedale.

It's a "convenience fee."

And of course.. eBay is happy!

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.
