The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life. – Theodore Roosevelt

| Get rid of Census bureau ASAP. Each town could estimate population, that's good enough. |

But a decennial federal census is mandated in the Constitution of 1787! Congress is actually doing it's job right once every ten years. |

I got another packet too. I figure that cost the tax payers at least another $50,000,000,00 or so. |

Hmmm, that's one part of the Constitution I would like to amend then. The Census is infuriatingly inefficient and wasteful. I worked there once upon a time...pitiful. Management with negative IQ's.
Sorry, Founders, you were wrong on this one. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the census was to literally do a head count so we could determine how many representatives to have. Nothing more, nothing less.
But we no longer do that, which itself could be deemed unconstitutional. Instead it is used for profiling to dole out welfare, which also could be construed as unconstitutional. And as of late, it is being used for more nefarious reasons too.
The one thing in the Constitution that Congress actually still honors, and it still got corrupted into something the founding fathers never intended.
The founding fathers didn't screw up, "we the people" did. So seeing that this country has decided to keep the number of congressmen/women at a fixed number, the census is no longer needed.

Since the *ratio* of each state's Representatives in the House is supposed to reflect the *ratio* of that state's population, we must know the the effects of internal migration and population growth of each state relative to all the other states. Thus, the census is still necessary. In order to compare apples to apples, the same counting method must be used for all states at the same time. The only good way to do that is at the federal level. In the 1780s, it was determined that this could be done comfortably every ten years, and not more often. As technology has improved data collection and processing rates, we *could* do the census more often. Some other federal agency is already doing this every year, which is why the Census Bureau isn't mailing out long forms in 2010; that work is regularly being done by some other department. So if anything, the Census Bureau has returned back to its roots of only counting people every ten years. |

| The Constitution is good, the best so far, but not holy and inerrant in my view. Man-made, after all, isn't it? Bluegill, you make a great point, but if you're making a framework for the future, part of that is to anticipate future weaknesses too and prevent them--which is what they were trying to do in so many areas. I admit it's hard to see centuries ahead, so we can't really blame them as individuals. But putting a head count in the hands of the feds is asking for trouble--corruption will eventually set in on such a project. Ceru, apples to apples is a good thing, but at what cost? It's so far out of hand. I think it should be done via local and state reporting, methods documented and audits possible if needed. With good management though, I admit it could be much better even as a fed project. Image how corrupt, misguided, and despicable the people are in charge of it right now. |
