County,
Take a vacation to Hawaii and pay for the trip in 94's. Dump any extras there. Way to wipe out you banks supply too.
Any chance for a new source?
Are you dumping them in machines? I bet many banks would take them as a deposit. Open a new account somewhere and deposit as whole unopened boxes.
You have taken over as skunk box leader now?
Oh man....

Nope... zerocd has got 20 more SKUNK boxes than me.
I don't have too many choices in the area I live. I sure don't want to travel 30 miles just to get SKUNKY boxes. So, I am going to cut back on the half sorting, down to $3K/week, until the 1994-P boxes end. It would be easier to dump 25% less coins too. In a couple hours, I can unwrap $3K of useless BU halves. Dumping them takes far longer. If the halves continue to be bad, I'll continue to discard them at my dump banks until their ALL gone (from Brink's to Dunbar). I've gone through 12 1994-P BU half $1000 bags so far from Brink's with an occasional box of circulated halves (halves that were turned in local banks?). There could easily be another 50-100 $1000 bags that my local Brink's got from the FED. And, the Federal District 5 (Richmond, VA) could be running out of circulated halves too (I hope not, because we all would be swamped by BU halves in our area soon). Meanwhile, I'll spend my sorting time increasing my COPPER hoard. |

Welcome to the hunt for SILVER halves. As you can see, it's FEAST OR FAMINE - the destiny of a half hunter. Patience and persistence are the qualities that you need when the FAMINE comes. |

However, will the 1994-P BU boxes end this week???
Glad the streak is finally broken. That record might hold up a while.
Hope that run of 94 halves is over too. Bring on the 93's!!!
Thanks...
I guess there is no particular reason they have to be all 1994-P BU halves. I got about 4-6 boxes of 1995-P BU halves a few months ago (you got one of them too). I've seen a lot of 1998-P and 2000-P BU halves mixed in circulated boxes the past year. I guess 1993-P BU halves could be next on the scene. If it's BU halves that I get, I would like to see some NIFC boxes come out of the FED because they are running out of halves - that would be nice. |

I'm back folks.. I took a break for a while.. Went on vacation to Hawaii.. I really did. Anyway I am going to give a break down on my sorting for the last 2 weeks.
To start it off I had a road trip for work and hit a bank for $200.00 in CWR of halves. I scored (3) 40% out of those.
(1) 1965 (1) 1968-d (1) 1969-d
I also got $165.00 in CWR Dimes and scored (5) silver roosie's.
(1) 1960-d (2) 1963-d (2) 1964-d
Then a couple of days ago I hit a bank and the teller told me she only had 1 half dollar. A 40%er..
(1) 1969-s Proof
Then I picked up another $250.00 in CWR dimes and picked up 2 more silver. One was a silver Canadian dime..
(1) 1959-d (1) 1963 Canadian
Then today the first bank I went to had $5.00 in loose halves in the tray. I bought them and found a 90%
(1) 1964-d
went to the next bank and they had 3 rolls of halves.
Skunk.
Next bank had none..
Then I went to one of my dump bank branches but not a dump bank that I use. I sold the loose halves I had to the teller who ran them through the coin counter in back. About half way through the counter stopped and she had to change the halve bag out. So I asked if I could buy that bag. Knowing that I don't dump there there might be a good chance at finding something. So I bought the $500.00 bag of loose halves from the counter and took it home. I cut the bag open and dumped it on the floor. The first thing that caught my eye was a ring. I picked it up and looked it over. It's a fairly light 10K gold ring! It weighs in at 2.86 g. So just over $40.00 worth of gold!! This bag also did some World Traveling as there were quite a bit of Foreign in it. Here is a list of what I found. Silver first (5) 90% and (11) 40%
(4) 1964 Kennedy's (1) 1964-d Kennedy (1) 1965 40% (3) 1966 40% (3) 1967 40% (3) 1968-d 40% (1) 1969-d 40%
(2) Car Wash tokens (1) Yellow Stone National Park good luck token (1) Flattened penny (The kind you get made at a fair) (1) 1986 $200 Mexican Peso (2) 2008 10 Mexican Peso's (2) 1970's British 10 New Pence (2) 1990's British 50 Pence (1) 1977 20 Seniti from Tonga (1) 1973 Swiss 2 Franc (Worth $1.86 at today's exchange rate) (1) 1996 Swiss 5 Franc (Worth $4.65 at today's exchange rate)
I was short a total of (5) half dollars after counting each of the items above as a half dollar. I returned the all the foreign coins and tokes with the exception of the Swiss Franc's. The counting machine took them again. So in the end I was only short $2.50 in halves but had quite a bit of gains!!
Total take was 1.19 grams of pure gold, 3.43 ounces of silver and $6.51 worth of Swiss Franc's.. |

Well, I increased my orders this week and... it's not helping! Just went thru another $1500 in halves and no Silver, no proofs, and no NIFC's.
Box 1 (Bank B): Skunk!
Box 2 (Bank B): More Skunk!!
Box 3 (Bank B) Most Skunked!!!
I have 5 more boxes to pick up tomorrow between my two source banks, please keep your fingers crossed for me... I definitely need it. |

I've kinda thought that some counters used the half bag as a catch-all for the odd stuff. Does your machine have a reject chute?
quote: Originally posted by jtlee321 I returned all the foreign coins and tokes with the exception of the Swiss Franc's. The counting machine took them again.
And it actually counted them? WHAT KIND OF MACHINE IS THIS? Were they all approximately the size of a half? All at least larger than a presidential dollar? |

I was surprised that they were all accepted again. Most were similar in size to the halves. Some of the 10 and 50 Pence had flat sides. I was very shocked that the machine took them back.
The 2 Franc is only slightly larger than a Presidential Dollar but about 90% the size of a half dollar and weighs about 2.5 g less. The 5 Franc is actually larger than than a half dollar and it weighs 2 g more than a half dollar.
The machine does have a reject chute as I have had Canadian coins returned to me.
I am not sure what kind of machine it is. I only know that all of the Wells Fargo branches around here use the same machines.
If I was some unscrupulous person I could buy a bunch of the old 200 Mexican Peso coins for like $0.05 each and mix a bunch in with some halves and make a nice little profit.. |

Well, I will maintain my grand position as skunk half box leader dude with pride then.
I love my Ryedale and not only for sorting and hoarding coppers. It provides me with time spent sorting for wheats and finding gems for albums.
Searching for war nickels and buffalos has also become a great joy and a fine break from halves which can be tedious. I have lots of albums going and three are for Jeffersons. Nickels gems are hard to find as nickels ding up rather quickly. I only save the cream of the crop and find great joy in pennies and nickels where it all started, fifty years ago.
Happy hunting.
Someday I would love to hear more about how you stash pennies in the eves.......
I have an old house I am working on. It was abandoned for 7 years before I bought it. A couple months back, I arrived to find two elderly ladies parked in the driveway. One was out looking around and she introduced herself and friend as former associates of the late owner.
I found out the lady who owned the house was a long time owner of a prominent jewelry store. The ladies asked me about what happened to all the antiques and curios she had. I had already searched the very convoluted, unique aspects of the home. An incredible number of nooks and crannies. This renewed my interest to see if she had anything hidden away in the walls, attics and odd spaces. I have found some intriquing newspaper clippings about JFK's death along with some old tools, keys and odd bit but nothing really of value.
There are some eves I haven't checked.....

What kind of SILVERs did you find? 40%ers, 1964 Kennedys, or ?
How many SILVERs were in each box?
I've been averaging 10 a box or so some times 20 or more. Mainly 40% clads. Since I've started in the last month or so I don't know how many boxes I've gone through prob 10k at least and have 240 40% and 18 90% a few where proof sets and one 1954 franklin. Unfortunetly the main bank I've been using has cut shipments down to one day a week but It will be a busy week since I ordered 10 boxes :) |

To add your finds to the stats, I need more info. So, if you could, please post what's in each box as you find your SILVERs in the future. When I get your detailed info, I can add your finds into the SILVER stats. |
