I opened a roll tonight and saw a bluish-green looking wheat. I always try to guess the date as I flip it and guessed 1937. When I turned it over I noticed the Indian head and then glanced down to see 1867! I couldn't believe it. It's very worn and bluish-green but the date is clear as day! It's crazy to think that that penny was minted 143 years ago and bounced around the world until someone carelessly through it into a roll. Found 2 mid-40's wheats too!!

Wow what an old one. This leads me to wonder has this penny been in circulation for 143 years or has it been in somebodies collection that got out. I'd be curious to hear people opinions on this. For the older people in this hobby how long was it since every now and then did you see an IH in your pocket change. |

Consider yourself quite fortunate. I've got over a quarter ton of CU pennies, and have yet to get my first Indian. Hopefully some of your luck will come my way! |

I've read on this forum and it's my average too that on average you'll find one Indian for every 100,000 cents searched. I hope you beat the law of averages and find another one in the next box.
500,000 cents hand searched-- 5 Indians found. |

Did you find these in a box from the feds? Or did they come from local coinage? In 2007 I found my only two Indians: one in a box of local pennies, the other in a federal reserve box.
My opinion is that most of these Indians are unwittingly taken off grandma's or grandpa's dresser, rolled up, and turned into to the bank for paper money. |

My theory is that kids are putting many rare or numismatic or high metal value coins into circulation.
I base that theory on the fact that I do most of my coin searching with the cooperation of an establishment with patrons that are mostly under 18. I am allowed to inspect coinage at one of these places and trade out for what I want. Somewhere around 40% of my silver finds come from that one place. Someone who works there said that they have seen a lot of old coins come through there, because kids don't understand numismatic or metal value, and they don't think that any coin is worth much. So, they have no issues taking one or two coins from the bucket in Dad's closet, or out of Grandpa's dresser drawer, not realizing that what they're spending may be worth many times what they're getting out of it! |

Brinks Box.
I couldn't believe it. They are average on copper, but the wheat count is lower than the CWR's depending on some CWR. I caught $15 in clean zink in CWR this week. |

Lucky You! Nice Find!
Still have not found one myself!
I can't imagine this coin has been floating around for 143 years but if so could you imagine the stories it could tell! |

I found my Indian in a Fed box from BB&T.
Squashpup: I think you are probably right about kids putting coins like this into circulation. Our school is doing a fundraiser for charity and I took a look through them last night. I found 6 copper Canadians, 6 wheats (40,44,44,50,51,57) a John Adams dollar, and Sacagawea dollar and a Susan B fifty-cent piece. The best find of the night was a 1959 Roosevelt dime. My first pre-64 find in circulation ever!
All these coins, some harder to find than others, were found in the bin that 3rd graders deposited in. Kids don't know the difference and will throw in any old coin. I'm just glad I volunteered to turn them in, although I filled up three bags at the bank today and it took me over 30 minutes to get in and out. :(

P.S.- I replaced the value of every coin I took. |
