I'll post a pic when I figure this out but I just got to ask...

Found a 76 today, that is about the size of a dime. It is extreamly thick, has very large smooth ring around the outter edge and most of the markings are barely vizable. You can barely see the year, liberty is there, most of the letter are can't be made out, just a slight trace of them there.

Anyone? Beuller?

Edit:Thought I set the profanity alarms off with such a nasty like topic.

Sounds like someone was in the process of making a ring out of it.

Oh ya, great find. Fun to shrink money eh? I read about this before but I don't think anyone here has found one before.

Here is how it is done with video. You must be logged in to see this link.

and lots of photos and details here from an unrelated site.

That's cool....

But it doesn't look anything like those do.

I'll get a pic up tomarrow.

I swear it looks like a blank with a little bit of the outter bits of the coin missing. The IGWT is not in the strike at all with his head right up against the edge of the rim, and the bottom of the bust is right on the rim of the coin also.
I can't figure it out. It has all the regular markings of a penny but its dime sized and real thick in the side.
Anyone ever see one like this?

Oh I thought it was a "half". Sounds more like an error on the wrong blank then.

Would you be able to push the center out or is it all one peice?

It's solid as hell.
The rim seem like there was just to much metal in the die, and it was struck in dimes die.
It really is wierd man.

The shape seems too perfect to believe "someone was trying to make a ring".

You might have a real rarity.

What does the coin weigh?

Don't have a scale available to me just yet, if I had to guess, it actually feels heavier than a zink.

It feels to the touch heavy.

Ran into a coin buddy at the lanes this morning...he bout' fell out right in front of me.
He says, "Dude! If this is real, you got like the only one I ever seen."

Google search on minting errors turns up nothing like it.
Ideas?

Just my two cents!

Well, By knowing the weight you can at least tell if it's a copper penny planchet(3.11g) or a zinc 2.5g

I would think if the weight is exact. That would get you closer to discovering the origin of your WTF coin.

Edit It might be a "capped die strike"

You must be logged in to see this link. Look at the coin in the middle of the photo on this thread. Looks like your find.
