The same question was asked @ month or 2 ago. We were advised to keep them sperated because the corrosion will spread to other coins. I have a bag of nasty looking copper pennies. |

try it and find out. I think humidity would have to be a factor as well, but try an experiment. Get ten different ugly abe's and sandwich them between two clean coppers. Set the ten piles aside where they won't be disturbed for six months and then see what happens. Who wants to take on this science project and track the results? Volunteers? |

I know this is copper forum and not silver, but while on the subject of corrosion, can those filmy green spots on silver half dollars spread? Somebody on another sight said to leave them in summer sunlight for 2 days at it would burn off. Kind of think he was hoping I'd leave them outside where he would find them. Any way, can that corrosion spread through the other silver coins? |

Found this info for you:
Silver coins, when newly minted, have a bright silvery-white surface. A chemically active metal, silver tends to tone deep brown to black. Circulated silver coins will often have a dull gray appearance, sometimes with a deep gray or black area. Silver coins acquire a blue, green, or violet oil-like tone through tarnishing that can enhance the appearance and desirability of an old silver coin and should not be cleaned.

Found this info for you:
THE SPREADING OF VERDIGRIS In some ways verdigris is like a bacterium or virus. It's obvious after looking at the chemistry involved that it can spread from coin to coin by contact. It's a simple matter of the verdigris infected coin being a donor of the corrosive elements. Since verdigris is an active spot on the coins surface that is constantly undergoing change based on composition, hydration and temperature, the chemical equilibriums dictate that some of the counter-ions (acetate, hydroxide, carbonate, etc.) will be present. If that verdigris stays in contact with a fresh copper surface, some of those ions will naturally migrate. Once they have moved to the new surface, cupric compounds will start to form producing new verdigris. As the spot is continually fed by the donor coin and by exposure to air and water, the verdigris will grow. Isolation of coins from the verdigris feed materials is of utmost importance to the numismatist! Collectors should always separate verdigris infected coins and quarantine them! They will act as a catalyst for the continual formation of verdigris via ion migration. Here's an example of how verdigris can spread by contact. This "mated-pair" was found inside of an old roll of coins. The coins were literally stuck together. The rest of the coins in the roll were in excellent condition so it is obvious that the verdigris on the problem coin prompted the formation of verdigris on the non-infected coin. This is a picture from above the mated-pair:

although I do not advocate the cleaning of coins for numismatic purposes......what about the idea of utilizing a tumbler to clean "dirty" coppers to store....? |

I think it's more trouble than it's worth. Like throwing a minnow back because it doesn't meet the minimum length as a keeper. Don't contaminate your keepers with one cent losers! Just throw the ugly abe's back and looker for some better conditioned cents to keep. It's a waste of your time to clean them. Sort more, instead |
