Given all the discussion here about regional variation in sorting percentages, I've decided to map the phenomenon. I've created a Frappr map that shows percentages reported by contributers:
You must be logged in to see this link.
Please help this map grow! Add yourself to this map, and report your recent percentages. If you're nervous about giving away your location, please approximate (use your state capitol or local post office). Also, tell us what you're sorting and how long you've been at it.
As more people join and contribute, we'll see a map of circulating copper volumes. Any guesses where copper will be the most common?
RUNNING TOTAL --------------------------------------- 3501 zincs (1982-2007) 75.4% 1106 coppers (1959-1982) 23.8% 31 wheats (1920-1958) 7 Canadian (1968-1995) 1 dime (2004)

I'm pinned, but I blame you if all the penny hoarders start to move to Indianapolis. |

Snappy, 87 miles should be a big enough margin. I know of at least 1 serious hoarder that is 30 miles from me and we never impact each other.
My guesses for best percentages are Maine and Michigan.
Great idea Cerulean.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

87 miles is only one town away both small towns (under 2000 people). (same coin carrier) |

There were a few dozen "anonymous visitors" on the map, but I have now blocked those from appearing. I have also posted a link to this on TNet, so the map is not exclusive to RealCent members. As of 4pm Friday, there are seven different percentage reports mapped.

I was in Cleveland today so I hit a couple of banks for pennies. When a teller handed over a box of pennies she gave me a wink and said "this is a nice heavy one for you." It was almost like she knew what I was up too. Well, she was right as its weight was 16 pounds six ounces. Glad she didn't keep it for herself.

Well, I'm in and on the map. All alone in my state.
Deal
I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks. |

Wow Snappy, that is a small town.. I think there were that many people in line at the bank this evening when I went to get some pennies and play money for the weekend. Your banks might not get fresh supplies of pennies as fast as some other places. You might be able to cause a penny shortage all by yourself, and then sell your zincs at a premium.
I am on the map now too.. looks like I have the whole state of CA to myself.. Woohoo!!!
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

How come some people have an orange dot for copper and others have a red, including me? Cool map though. Funny, if you zoom in on my dot, its actually kinda close, within 10 miles. Just for the record, my city contains roughly 110k people. I see returns of at least 20%. Never received an already-sorted box. Never received a box of '07's either, (knocking repeatedly on wood).

Orange is for those of us with lots of wheat cents.. LOL. Actually I think it represents guys that registered early on the map.. then the colors changed slightly.

p.s. Not too bad in the wheat department here, not as big as yours I'm sure HoardCopperByTheTon. Not too bad though....Can I get a burnt orange color for mid-level wheats? hehe

I think if you put yourself on the map, you should also put your percentage. Exact city not so important. The regional copper totals are of interest. How about your forum name also. Just suggestions.

What in the world is wrong with that site? I have added myself, uploaded a picture, and entered my percent, but still I don't show up on the map or in the member list. |
